Swedes e-mail lawmakers, protest eavesdropping law
Source: AP

STOCKHOLM, Sweden - Swedes have bombarded lawmakers with more than 1 million e-mails protesting the country's new eavesdropping law, adding to the growing public outcry over the measure, an official said Monday.

The contentious bill allows officials to eavesdrop on all cross-border e-mail and telephone traffic. The government plans to implement it in January.

The bill was passed June 18 in a 142-138 vote despite nationwide protests that are still continuing.

Critics say the law will encroach on privacy and jeopardize civil liberties. Supporters claim it is needed to fight international crime and terrorism.

Over a million protest emails? Not bad for a country of nine million.

5. They know that this eavesdropping law is the pre-cursor to
a police state because they also acknowledge that the law will encroach on privacy and jeopardize civil liberties. Good for them they should never comprimise this principle.....

Edit to add: Sorry, I am not sure whether Red State Update had spoken about it yet, but, I was hoping everyone would add this to their suggestion list, n' all. As in, ask their opinion.

9. This eavesdropping is being introduced everywhere.
The NYTimes stated on Saturday that the US and Europe have an agreement to share certain personal and private information that they obtain, I presume, from eavesdropping and other electronic surveillance. This has nothing to do with terrorism in my opinion. Rather, it has to do with the multinational companies trying to control us. I think they are worried about copyright violations and other such stuff on the internet. This is about big companies, not governments, I think. Don't ask me why.

Also, I believe that the first steps toward this universal surveillance were undertaken during the Clinton era.

12. This is some of the fallout from electing a rightwing govt.
If the election was honest, the Swedes screwed up.

But you know, the Swedes have such a long and powerful history of successful near-socialism that I have to wonder how honest that election was.
