Bush: "I want the facts" on Iraqi weapons

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US President George W. Bush (news - web sites) said that he wants "the facts" about Iraqi arms but declined to lend his voice to a growing chorus calling for an independent probe into incorrect pre-war claims.

AFP Photo

"I want the facts," the president, who built his case for invading Iraq (news - web sites) on charges Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) had chemical and biological weapons, said during a brief public appearance with economists who support his policies.

In what could prove a major election-year headache for Bush, former chief US weapons hunter David Kay said his Iraq Survey Group found no evidence of banned stockpiles in Iraq and that they probably did not exist on the eve of the war.

52. "I want facts",...ahem, that mislead the people about the truth,...
Everything that comes out of this man's mouth seems the exact opposite of his motivations (are definitely the opposite of his actions). But, you know, maybe he is like totally an empty shell and, who knows, could be the man has an addiction problem with focus groups. :D Let's get the pharmaceutical companies on this, right away!!!!

Here you are President Bush: The facts are that you are a criminal. You are a lying, cheating, murdering, drug taking, hypocritical, lazy, ignorant, mean, ugly, disrespectful, self absorbed, son of another president who stole an election just like you did.

Are those enough facts or would you like some more.

I want The Facts, indeed.

16. Facts? I got your "facts" right here - The "Office of Special Plans"
In the days after September 11, Mr Rumsfeld and his deputy, Paul Wolfowitz, mounted an attempt to include Iraq in the war against terror. When the established agencies came up with nothing concrete to link Iraq and al-Qaida, the OSP was given the task of looking more carefully.

-snip-

The OSP had access to a huge amount of raw intelligence. It came in part from "report officers" in the CIA's directorate of operations whose job is to sift through reports from agents around the world, filtering out the unsubstantiated and the incredible. Under pressure from the hawks such as Mr Cheney and Mr Gingrich, those officers became reluctant to discard anything, no matter how far-fetched. The OSP also sucked in countless tips from the Iraqi National Congress and other opposition groups, which were viewed with far more scepticism by the CIA and the state department.

There was a mountain of documentation to look through and not much time. The administration wanted to use the momentum gained in Afghanistan to deal with Iraq once and for all. The OSP itself had less than 10 full-time staff, so to help deal with the load, the office hired scores of temporary "consultants". They included lawyers, congressional staffers, and policy wonks from the numerous rightwing thinktanks in Washington. Few had experience in intelligence.

-snip-

"They surveyed data and picked out what they liked," said Gregory Thielmann, a senior official in the state department's intelligence bureau until his retirement in September. "The whole thing was bizarre. The secretary of defence had this huge defence intelligence agency, and he went around it."

Edited on Fri Jan-30-04 03:30 PM by Marianne
but he want the facts on---on--on what the hell does he want the facts on? He knew what the facts were--they were the ones he said they were, and he was hell bent upon making the conclusion fit his greedy premise no matter what the real facts were. Now he is trying to pretend he did not know the facts? Oh the humanity!

He wants the "facts"-?????? Now???? He wants the facts now?????? He is a despicable, coward of a man pretending he operated on non facts while all the while knowing he was pulling the wool over the eyes of his own people. May he never have a good night's sleep for the rest of his pathetic puny , little entitled life. He is pathetic. Abosolutely a pathetic little, knickers wearing, foot stamping, lying, pathetic murderer of thousands of innocent children, babies, preganant women and old people.

that they couldn't show anybody because it was so sensitive.

Well now that their mission, removing Saddam from power, has been completed, there really is no need to keep anything about Iraq secret? Just like in poker, it's time for them to show their hand. They said they had all the aces. Then lay em down. Oh, they bluffed? It's time for these scam artists to be removed from the game.

It's time for, "I want the facts". Except that he won't allow the UN inspectors in Iraq, sent in Kay, a known advocate for the invasion, and is "sidestepping" a call for an investigation.

Sure he wants the facts, but ONLY if they could vindicate him and help him win the election. The shallowness and transparency of bush & co never ceases to amaze me

51. absolutely correct ... Bush declines an independent inquiry
if he wanted to know the "facts", then why is he opposing the calls for an independent commission to find out those facts?

what he wants is to make it appear that he is concerned over this, and then sweep it under the table in a whitewash or coverup. Just like 9-11.

What Bush says, and what Bush really wants and does ... are two totally different things.

Accountablility. The buck stops with Bush. He's responsible for killing thousands in attacking and invading another country without the facts.

Sounds like a war crime to me.

I'm waiting for Tenet or some brave, principled CIA person to explode and come clean about Rummy's four man team and Cheney's strong arm tactics in skewing this intel to meet their needs.

But let's say for a moment that it really is the CIA's fault. Tell your right wing friends that you can't give Daddy's boy kudos for defeating Iraq and finding Saddam and make excuses for this situation.

Dubya didn't defeat nor find Saddam. His (ahem, some would say Clinton's) military did it. If you prop him up for that, then one must blame his CIA for the intel failures of 9/11, the bunk al-Qaeda links, and the vast stockpiles of WMD we haven't found.

Edited on Fri Jan-30-04 07:38 PM by WorstPresidentEver
Please how stupid do they think we are. They "knew" that Saddam had all these weapons, if they really "knew" it they'd have several independent confirmations. Of course they didn't have that, so even if some intelligence was "bad" they're still liars.

Why then did they make up shit like the yellow cake and Saddam being in cahoots with Al Qaeda?

If they were so sure of genuine intelligence why did they set up the Office For Special Plans to funnel selected intelligence to von Rumsfeld and the White House? Maybe thats where all the bad intelligence came from, you know, from the office you set up to give you bad intelligence so you had an excuse to invade Iraq. Asshole.

70. It' really incredible
You got my full compassion for this president. This man is such a calamity, I think the whole world will thank you if America elect a Democrat in 2004. (And don't let the election be stolen again)
Greeting from Germany :)

72. He's a year too late in asking for the facts.
Anybody with half a brain would have asked this question long before launching any kind of an invasion on anybody, both to justify the invasion and to protect your troops going in.

All of the above were able to use their intelligence to determine that Saddam was NOT a threat to anyone. You should start using your intelligence.

BTW: You owe a humble knee bended apology to all of the above,

PLUS the families of the over 500 American servicemen that your poor intelligence needlessly killed in Iraq,

PLUS the families and friends of the thousands of American servicemen that your poor intelligence maimed and wounded in Iraq,

PLUS the families and friends of the tens of thousands of Iraqis your poor intelligence needlessly killed in Iraq,

PLUS, the millions of Americans you ridiculed who were intelligent enough to determine on our own that Saddam was not a threat to the USA.

We were RIGHT; you were WRONG!!!! You got some splainin to do!

PS: I remember during your campaign for president, someone in Texas said they weren't gonna vote for you because you had very poor intelligence. I'm glad to see you have finally admitted it! Admitting that you are lacking in intelligence is the first step for recovery.

79. I give up.
Bush and his cronies will get off, yet again, on this wmd atrocity. Everything is being set for the CIA to get the blame. I guess that's the privilege of having your party as the majority in all three branches of government. You can commit as many crimes as you please while your party sit back and not question anything.

The republican party is corrupt to the core and whomever vote for these thugs should hang their head in shame.
