Poll: Obama backers are more excited than McCain's
Source: AP

John McCain is facing an excitement deficit. While overall interest in the presidential campaign has swelled since last fall, backers of Barack Obama are more fired up and express more loyalty to their candidate than McCain's do, a poll by The Associated Press and Yahoo News showed Friday. In addition, individual groups backing Obama — African-Americans, Democrats and liberals — are more enthusiastic than whites, Republicans and conservatives, who are more aligned with McCain, the GOP senator from Arizona.

Obama faces hurdles of his own. The poll shows lagging fervor for the Democratic senator from Illinois by supporters of his vanquished rival, Hillary Rodham Clinton. And there are lots of dispirited and undecided independents, who are expected to be pivotal on Election Day, now less then four months off.

The passion and interest shown by blocs of voters are important because they affect who will be motivated to vote. For now, the numbers favor Obama: 38 percent of his supporters say the election is exciting compared with 9 percent of McCain's. Sixty-five percent of Obama's backers say they are hopeful about the campaign, double McCain's, and the Democrat's supporters are three times likelier to express pride.

"Being African-American, you know, I do have some biases," said John Douglas, 67, of Villa Rica, Ga., an Obama supporter. He said the pride and thrill he feels about the possibility of the first black president "has been building up for my lifetime, it's been building up since the inception of our country."

1. Even if someone is a staunch McCain supporter, I can't see how they'd be "excited" about him....
.... He's been around and in politics since the Defenstration of Prague, and he doesn't exactly inspire a lot of excitement.

3. "Excitement" doesn't matter for McCain
I doubt if Republicans were excited by GWB, or by GHWB. But Republicans vote. Good weather or bad.

The trick will be to maintain or resurrect excitement for Obama in November. We have to make sure that we Democrats get off our butts and vote. If that happens, we win. If not, ...

8. So that picture is for real?
I saw it yesterday and assumed it was a fake, but it didn't have the MSNBC framing or caption on it.

Wow, that's really saying something, isn't it? LOL!

7. I'm finding that repugs are voting for McCain only because
he is their candidate. Most of them are clueless as to what the issue's are and still think we're looking for WMD in Iraq and that these people are the cause 9/11. Most of them get their information from their churches I believe. When someone mentions that a Democrat will raise taxes (they seem not to know that Obama plans on hitting up those making over $250,000) and I ask them if they think it is okay to decrease taxes and run up a large debt...they are not sure how to respond! When I bring up unniversal health care they get that defensive stance again and talk about how that will raise taxes. I tell them how I just spent time in Germany and Norway and how they are very happy with their health care and education (through college) and they are paying a lot less than we are total and getting a lot more (Tax in Norway it is about 28% of income and they also get charged 25% sales tax but 12% for food tax). Our exchange student just had a total hip surgery at age 20 (long story)and she has everything taken care of plus in house rehab for weeks. Not only this but their taxes actually help people who are in trouble and give them a chance with rehab and job skills training to help them get back on their feet. They've got two kids in college. Our insurance here in the states goes up just about 25% every few years and we have no control over this. As we head torwards (or plan for) retirement we get to look forward to putting are 3 kids through college (we started late) and paying ever increasing and out of control medical insurance costs that cover only catastrophic. Looking at the positive side...we can afford to pay for insurance but many can't. Repugs need to get a clue! What do we get with our taxes...bandaides and a war!
