Kyrgyz cops find weapons in US citizen's apartment

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan (AP) -- Kyrgyz police have uncovered a large weapons cache at an apartment rented by a U.S. citizen, officials said Tuesday, though American officials say the arms were meant to be used in counterterrorism training.

Several U.S. Embassy personnel and 10 U.S. service personnel were present during the raid Monday evening, the Interior Ministry said.

Authorities in the Central Asian nation say the cache included heavy machine guns, rifles, grenade launchers, handguns and several hundred rounds of ammunition.

The individuals found at the apartment have not yet been identified, police said.

2. Erm, counter-terrorism training? Stored in an apartment? Officer Barbrady, I declare shenanigans.
Sounds more like Kyrgyz officials just busted some arms traders.

Police in Kyrgyzstan arrest U.S. diplomat, 10 troops

BISHKEK: Police in the Central Asian state of Kyrgyzstan on Friday arrested an American diplomat and 10 troops with heavy ammunition.

Police raided a home and arrested a US diplomat along with 10 others troops, the interior ministry said.

The US troops have arrived here for military exercises with Kyrgyzstan’s intelligence agency, statement further said, adding they were not arrested but investigation was underway.

A spokesman for the U.S. embassy in Bishkek said it was monitoring the case.

Washington established its military air base in Kyrgyzstan in 2001 to support operations in nearby Afghanistan. The former Soviet republic also hosts a Russian military air base.

Kyrgyz people have had mixed feelings about the presence of U.S. troops in their homeland since 2006, when a U.S. airman shot dead a Kyrgyz man at the base.
