Cheeks Kilpatrick triumphs over Waters in close primary race (MI-13)
Source: Detroit Free Press

Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, the mother of Detroit’s mayor, overcame a City Hall scandal involving her son to narrowly defeat two challengers early today in a Democratic primary.

Early results Tuesday showed the six-term congresswoman trailing both her opponents, but as the night wore on and more Detroit numbers came in, she pulled even and then slightly ahead of former state Rep. Mary Waters at around midnight.

With all precincts reporting, Kilpatrick had 20,888 votes, or 39.1% and Waters had 19,183 votes, or 36%. State Sen. Martha Scott was in third place with 13,280 votes, or 24.9%, according to the Associated Press.

Waters had not conceded as of early this morning. The Associated Press reported that a message seeking comment was left on her cell phone after it declared Kilpatrick the winner.

1. I have a real hard time believing there wasn't
some funny business in this one. Her son is just as corupt a mayor as a city could get. Her family is too! Ripping the city off and probably enforcing more corrupt power over the city than Bush does over congress. She may of won, lot of stupid people in Detroit, but Waters is right in not conceding.
I smell several rats in this one.

2. Detroit kept corrupt Coleman Young in power for 20 years. Ruined the city.

4. Hey Detroit is still a great city
The only reason Coleman got power was because of the corrupt (white)police force was killing young black men on a whim, that wasn't right either. The city I believe is tired and ready to change. We've got to get rid of the Kilkpatrick's, they are a cancer. If you give the people a good candidate to pull behind they'll vote him in. I'm hope the Syracuse guard and all-star Detroit Piston Dave Bing will be the man, he's more capable than anyone in these parts for a long, long time.

Meanwhile I'm hoping the Kilkpatricks just stole their last election.

By the way; racist Oakland County Commissioners like L. Brooks Paterson don't help the situation either, the segregation here is worse than any American city in the country.

10. Great potential, but unrealized.
Detroit's waterfront should be like Chicago's.

Turnaround was hoped for when Archer was mayor. But he got nothing done dealing with the city council. The city government needs a real purge if any progress is to be made.

And the people who keep reelecting these jokers need to take some responsibility.

3. At this point...
I am starting to think that Detroit deserves what it is going to befall it. So much for a once great city.

5. Detroit can't be brought to it's knees
much further. It's on it's way up. Get Bing in as mayor and I think it would do alot of good. But, I just can't mention enough about the racism in this area. White people here keep moving to 150 mile road just to make sure they can stay away from the black guy.

6. Do you really have hope...
that Bing can be elected. I don't believe the current weasel will ever be booted from office. Although, I don't condone any racism, the current mayor probably gives whites, yellows, reds and everyone else a good reason to move.

7. C'mon man he's Dave Bing
Edited on Wed Aug-06-08 08:47 AM by Royal Oak Rog
from Wiki:

Bing went on to become a successful businessman, founding The Bing Group (http://www.binggroup.com/) in the Detroit area after his retirement. The company, among other things, supplies metal stampings to the auto industry. At the 1990 NBA All-Star Game, he received the Schick Achievement Award for his work after his NBA career. His number 21 was retired by the Detroit Pistons, and in 1996, he was named as one of the NBA's 50 Greatest Players of all time. Bing recently told the Detroit Free Press he would consider running for Mayor of Detroit.

Against this blubering mama's boy? Sure he'll try to paint Bing white, that's the only way he's ever won any election. But Bing can absolutely beat that fat bastard. Also there's about a 50 percent chance Kwame will be campaigning from jail.

8. I just don't have as much hope as you...
I believe the people of Detroit are just enamored with Kilpatrick. I'll never know why.

9. I'm not saying Kwame couldn't win
Hell, even Marion Barry was voted in D.C. after a crack conviction. I'm just saying with the 6 counts against him, and a guy like Bing who may be bullet proof the odds don't favor him.
