Bin Laden driver trial 'fair' - White House
Source: News AU

THE White House said today that Osama bin Laden's former driver, Salim Hamdan, had received a "fair trial" after military jurors at Guantanamo Bay rendered a split verdict on terrorism charges against him.

We're pleased that Salim Hamdan received a fair trial,'' spokesman Tony Fratto said after the Yemen native was found not guilty of terrorist conspiracy but guilty of the lesser charge of providing material support to terrorism.

The divided verdict marked a dramatic conclusion of the first trial before the controversial special tribunals created by President George W Bush and the US Congress to try suspects in the global war on terrorism.

"The Military Commission system is a fair and appropriate legal process for prosecuting detainees alleged to have committed crimes against the United States or out interests. We look forward to other cases moving forward to trial,'' Mr Fratto said.

2. "Bin Laden driver could stay indefinitely at Gitmo"
Edited on Wed Aug-06-08 01:02 PM by Q3JR4
GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba (AP) — The commander of the Guantanamo Bay detention center said Saturday he has been researching new potential accommodations for Osama bin Laden's driver, who could be held here indefinitely regardless of the verdict at his war crimes trial.(http://www.mlive.com/newsflash/international/index.ssf?/base/international-13/1217709844115260.xml&storylist=international).

So let's get this straight. Even if a jury declares that you are innocent, you're still staying in jail? Does that make sense to anyone?

After the way this country has treated the individuals held in custody at Guantanamo Bay I have serious doubts as to whether a trial conducted by the U.S. military can be considered in any way "fair."

Q3JR4.
