American killed at Games was coach's father-in-law
Source: CNN

BEIJING, China (CNN) -- A Chinese man wielding a knife stabbed an American couple in central Beijing on Saturday, killing the man and seriously wounding the woman before jumping to his death from an ancient tower, said U.S. Olympic officials and state-run media.

A female Chinese tour guide also was wounded in the attack, which happened around noon at the Drum Tower, a popular tourist site, China's official news agency, Xinhua, reported.

The U.S. Olympic Committee identified the dead man as Todd Bachman, the father-in-law of Olympic Men's Indoor Volleyball Head Coach Hugh McCutcheon. Bachman's wife, Barbara, suffered "serious and life-threatening" injuries, the committee said.

However, Xinhua reported that she and the tour guide were in "stable" condition at a hospital.

The couple's daughter, Elizabeth Bachman McCutcheon -- the coach's wife and a member of the 2004 indoor women's volleyball team -- was with them during the attack but was unharmed, USOC said.

2. So much for the sickly-sweet image China's been trying to push on us
Tourist attractions with inadequate security...yeah, makes me want to go there tomorrow! :sarcasm:

All the fancy light shows in the world don't change the fact that China is a cesspool, from its chewable air to the lead paint in its exports.

I pray the Olympics are never, ever held there again.

5. It is a totalitarian police state
I do not believe that the "terrorist " attack was a surprise, I do not believe that a USA coaches family "just happened" to be attacked.

They have plain clothes and uniformed police and army everywhere, they have bugged hotel rooms (US athletes were warned to be careful about what they brought and what they SAY in their rooms.) China censors and monitors computer and phone calls .

Pretty people and smiles do not really cover that up.

This was a tragic incident made by what most likely was troubled person. It could have happened anywhere in the world to anyone. It just happen to occur in China and the victims just happen to be Americans and it happened at a very sensitive time when the world's eyes are on the country including eyes of people that will use every little incident for their own benefit.
