Police raid headquarters of RNC protesters
Source: cnn

Police raided a rental hall used by a group organizing protests at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota, on Friday.

The RNC Welcoming Committee, which describes itself as "anarchist/anti-authoritarian," accused St. Paul police of trying to disrupt their protest planned for Monday, the day the GOP convention is set to begin.

While no one was arrested, the group said police temporarily detained and photographed at least 50 people who were inside the building.

St. Paul Police spokesman Tom Walsh said they were executing a search warrant.

"The cause for the search warrant is not public at this time," Walsh said.

As many as 30 police officers entered with guns drawn, according to witnesses in the building.

100. In May 2003 St Louis City MO police raided several
homes on the eve of an anti GMO conference taking place in St Louis. Like at the RNC raids, the cops claimed that they found bomb making materials such as nails. All of the places raided were in the process of being rehabbed.

Even before the raid the city cops were frightening downtown St Louis businesses with scary stories of "50,000 "Seattle" anarchists" coming to our fair city. Businesses boarded up their windows in preparation for the anarchists that never arrived.

City cops arrested people riding their bikes using a little enforced (and at that time rescinded) ordinance) claiming they were riding their bikes without a permit. People were taken to the city jail on a Friday evening. Trust me the city of St Louis jail is not for the weak and it is very much an inner city jail.

Here is an essay written by Matthew Rothschild of the Progressive Magazine.

http://www.ratical.org/ratville/CAH/protest=Crim.html

snip

Sarah Bantz is a member of the Missouri Resistance Against Genetic Engineering. Last May, she and several hundred others were gathering in St. Louis to protest against Monsanto and the World Agricultural Forum, which was meeting there.

On May 16, the first day of the protest weekend, Bantz and a small group of other activists went to the Regional Chamber and Growth Association to give their pitch on how biotech was hurting local farmers. After that meeting, she and her fellow activists piled into her van, but they were able to get only about a mile down the road when something unusual happened.

"All of a sudden there was one police car and then another, and I was pulled over," she recalls. "One officer came around and asked me to get out of the vehicle, which I did. The cop started to look through the van without permission. I had some Vitamin C pills sitting out, so they decided that was a drug and they were going to arrest me. They put me in cuffs and put me in the back of the car. They really had no grounds for arresting me, but I spent ten hours in jail." One reason they cited, along with the vitamins, was her failure to wear a seatbelt.

snip

Also on the same day, the police raided the Bolozone, an activist group home where many of the cyclists were staying. Reminiscent of police raids in Washington, D.C., during the 2000 World Bank-IMF protests, this one succeeded in detaining people prior to the demonstration.

3. So the Reich Wing Republican gestapo raid a political gathering place
Let me start the list of things that are wrong with this picture

1. Drawn guns for a simple fire code violation

2. First Amendment protection of Political Speech

3. Pure bold faced political motivation for conducting the raid.

I could go on, but three will do for a start.

15. The article says no one was arrested.
Not defending the cops...this was clearly a fishing expedition.

I don't think they can sue the police alleging 4th amendment violation as a search warrant was issued by a judge.

The ACLU will know what to do.

44. The Denver judges refused to play along
but the St. Paul judges disappoint.

In Denver, they tried to get a warrant based on weapons at the Convergence space - based on wood and bricks outside. Hmm... better raid Home Depot just to be safe. Maybe they're fronts for Osama bin Laden.

110. umm ..not quite...
in Denver, the DEMOCRATS were meeting, with a BLACK candidate, hence, no arrests for ANY weapons - 2nd Ammendment is GOD ya know and ANYBODY has GOT to be ALLOWED to carry LOADED weapons around ANYOLDTIME even at a POLITICAL RALLY...

so, if ("unfortunately") something BAD were to happen to a BLACK DEMOCRATIC candidate for President, well, can't be to "hasty" now can we, can't be "over zealous" now, can we...and after all WHAT A SHAME if something were to happen to a BLACK DEMOCRATIC candidate - again...

but, on the OTHER HAND...

CAN'T BE TOO CAREFUL WITH THESE CRAZY LEFTWING RADICAL TYPES during the REPUKE convention, now, can we?!?!

Gabe’s question remained unanswered. Ramsey County sheriff’s deputies said they were executing a search warrant, but would not show a copy of the warrant to lawyers or reporters. More than a dozen police vehicles , almost all unmarked, and more than 20 sheriff’s deputies and St. Paul police arrived at the building about 9:45 Friday night and were still there at 1 a.m., when I left.

Had they been persons of color, they would have been arrested en masse. Or just burned alive (a la MOVE in Philadelphia, PA ca. 1985).

She's with the Pagan Cluster, and her S.O. is there with her. I believe Starhawk is there too...she's a veteran of many, many demonstrations where the cops have used Gestapo tactics. I believe she trained the newbie demonstrators in non-violent resistqance. I hope so anyway. She sent me the article from the Daily Planet you posted. She was also an eyewitness to this raid and sent out an e-mail describing her reactions. I have asked for her permission to post her e-mails here on DU as I receive them.

103. I'll take that bet...
Edited on Sat Aug-30-08 04:44 PM by jberryhill
Since the better bet is that the affidavit was based on the group's video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njxmbOitsb8

Which shows - in a satiric context - but shows nonetheless:

- A soundtrack saying "I'm gonna getcha"

- A molotov cocktail

- "riot training"

- a "strike at a recruiting office" (complete with bowling ball and pins)

The video is cute. Film critics the police are not.

Put that list of things in a search warrant affidavit, and you are going to get a search warrant.

67. Big Brother's SECRET Warrant
"The cause for the search warrant is not public at this time," Walsh said.

A secret warrant: how can anyone know if one actually existed before the raid?

I was under the impression that warrants were in writing and must be shown upon demand to occupants when police enter. So much for that historical rumor, otherwise now known as a lie.

77. There was a warrant - but it was ludicrous
Most of the materials listed for the manufacture of bombs include glass jars, rags, string... you know, stuff you find in any home. The warrant also included a search for FECES. I'm sure they'll find some of those... when they search the bathroom. Of course, it also included all info found in the house, and electronics. It specifically mentioned X-Boxes. Yea, those things are really dangerous.

I think we can now EXPECT that the protesters will be more disruptive and violent because of this aggression by the authorities.

Legally, can one be forced to submit to having their picture taken if the person is not under arrest and was in a private residence?

39. And some folks at DU complain about Russia these days.
We are closer to the former Soviet Union than they are. Military police, assigned protest areas, illegal raids, elections where your brother appoints his friends to help "elect" you, people get suicided, laws aren't enforced against the party in power, false information is given to the people, people are kidnapped in the name of the state, people are searched and held without a reason. Man America has slid downhill fast.

47.  Longstanding Berkeley Community Center Raided by FBI August 27th
*Berkeley, CA* — At 10:30 am on Wednesday, August 27th, the UC Berkeley police, plainclothes FBI agents, and an Alameda County sheriff raided at gunpoint the Long Haul, a long-standing community library and info shop. Police spent at least an hour and a half searching the premises without allowing Long Haul members entry to their building. More than a dozen computers and other equipment were seized in the morning raid. Having made no attempt to contact Long Haul members, agents forced their way into the building by entering a neighboring non-profit office with guns drawn. Police refused to provide a search warrant until after the raid was over and property was seized.

60. You may want to read up on anarchism then
because there really is no irony in them having a meeting. It's anarchism, not random individualistic chaos.

You can start with wiki if you are interested:

66. sorry but

sorry, i dont go by wikipedia, i suggest you not do the same..

heres the definition of Anarchist in the dictionary :
1. A person who advocates or believes in anarchy or anarchism.
2. A person who seeks to overturn by violence all constituted forms of institutions of society and government, with no purpose of establishing any other system of order in the place of that destroyed.
3. A person who promotes disorder or excites revolt against any established rule, law, or custom

in a perfect utopian world, anarchism would work...it would suggest people were evoled and responsible enough to actually live without some sort of rule of law...
i hate to break it to everybody but human being arent even close to being able to put aside their massive egos along with their greed in order to respect the privacy or even exsistance of others.
if we were to break down the establishment to nothing these days, it would be pure chaos in which noone would thrive or progress.

im all for the idea when that day comes though. i wont be holding my breath

Believe me, I do not think wiki is a great source in general but I figured it was a good starting point since your comment indicated a complete lack of knowledge about anarchism.

It is a complex social theory with many factions - the dictionary definition is even less useful than the wiki entry. Maybe the secret warrant used the dictionary for evidence, lol.

You can opine about it all you want but still you have shown no understanding of anarchism as a social theory.

Here's another source of info, if you are actually interested in learning about it:

http://flag.blackened.net/daver/anarchism/bakunin/bakunin.html

When you're done with that, if you want more, check this out:

http://flag.blackened.net/daver/anarchism/index.html

More to your liking?

And I am not an anarchist, for the record, and by pointing out your erroneous comment above I wasn't mounting a defense of anarchism. But if you wish to opine or debate about anarchism, again, I suggest you learn what the fuck it is first.

Kinda looks like secret police tactics, huh? Do you suppose the raid was based on the journalist notes that were illegally seized last week from journalist who WEREN'T trespassing? Anyway, please keep in mind that When City police go awry, it is the City government officials who are responsible and to blame.

Below are the people who run the St Paul police authority. Matters of Citizen complaints about police conduct are referred to Chief of Police who is stated as the final authority on case disposition and discipline. In other words, there is no meaningful official police oversight other than the local courts or US justice department run by .. yup. Get it now? OK, then.

Law enforcement is fully engaged in post-9/11 mentality, that is, "intelligence" and "prevention" rather than "law enforcement". They don't intend to collect evidence for prosecution or to obey the constitution, and particularly not the 4th amendment. That would be "pre-9/11 thinking", perish the thought that officials would be obliged to obey the law.

The detention and collection of citizen dossiers because of suspician or for purpose of political intimidation and lacking any taint of probable cause of criminality, or based on "secret evidence" which cannot be challenged, this is what is meant by the FBI and police authority as "post 9/11 thinking". But this would not occur without political leaders who abrogate their oversight responsibilities and look the other way, or worse.

Perhaps it is time for citizens to consider some post 9/11 thinking of their own. Police States happen because the machinery of executive power, the guardians of power, chaff against restraint. So, in a democracy, who guards the guardians?
Goddammit, YOU DO!

The protests in Denver were very restrained, yet fascist push back was brutal and omnipresent.

The "Homeland Security" militarization of the Denver Police will have long ranging implications for The People who will have to live there after the DNC has gone. Denver is a test market for the new amerikkkan fascism.

64. I have a couple of questions.
While no one was arrested, the group said police temporarily detained and photographed at least 50 people who were inside the building.

St. Paul Police spokesman Tom Walsh said they were executing a search warrant.

"The cause for the search warrant is not public at this time," Walsh said.

1: Probably cause for the issuance of the search warrant?

2: What judge would allow this on a political organization?

108. They shouldn't have been raided in the first place...

...but it's not a Hollywood movie. It is a YouTube video made by the group that says "We're getting ready" for the republicon convention, and shows someone using a molotov cocktail.

The molotov cocktail is used for comedic effect, but if a cop puts into a search warrant affidavit that the group has published a video showing the use of a molotov cocktail, then that cop is going to get the warrant application granted.

My guess is that within 56 days, it will be declared and "ongoing investigation"....

"On the fifty-sixth day following the issuance of a search warrant, the search warrant affidavit contained in any court file or court record retention system is public information unless, before the fifty-sixth day after the search warrant is issued, a peace officer or prosecuting attorney obtains a suppression order from a magistrate upon a showing under oath that suppression of the affidavit is necessary to protect an ongoing investigation or the privacy or safety of a victim or witness. The suppression order may be obtained ex parte in the same manner that the search warrant was issued. An initial suppression order issued under this subsection expires on the fifty-sixth day after the order is issued. A second or subsequent suppression order may be obtained in the same manner as the initial suppression order and shall expire on a date specified in the order. This subsection and subsection (7) do not affect a person's right to obtain a copy of a search warrant affidavit from the prosecuting attorney or law enforcement agency under the freedom of information act, 1976 PA 442, MCL 15.231 to 15.246."

87. So it begins: Pre-RNC, police confiscate artist/videographers' equipment
Edited on Sat Aug-30-08 12:57 PM by vmaus
8.27.2008

"Without provocation, Minneapolis police recently confiscated the equipment and notes of three artist/journalists who are part of New York's Glass Bead Collective, a group that documents police misconduct, legal protest activities, and the phenomenon of political conventions. Two MPD squads and a sheriff's car stopped the trio and seized their belongings without consent, taking cameras, computers and notes. No charges were filed and the three were released, but without their gear. The UpTake has must-see video of a press event with the three artists -- Vlad Teichberg, Olivia Katz and Anita Braithwaite -- and their lawyer, Minneapolis' top civil-liberties attorney, Bruce Nestor. Please spread the word!"
