Brazil spending $160M on nuclear propelled submarine
The Associated Press

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil — Brazil will spend US$160 million by the end of next year on the development of a nuclear-propelled submarine to protect the oil reserves found recently off its coast, the defense minister said Friday.

The vessel — which officials hope to be complete by 2020 — would be the first nuclear-propelled submarine in Latin America. Brazil does not have nuclear weapons.

The submarine is the highlight of the Brazil's new defense plan — to be made public on Sept. 7.

Brazil is believed to be preparing to spend US$3.5 billion by the end of 2010 to upgrade its weapon systems, according to reports in the local media.

Speaking in Rio de Janeiro on Friday, Defense Minister Nelson Jobim said the upgrade includes provisions for a massive technology transfer from France — essential if Brazil hopes to have a nuclear submarine.

1. This is stupid
there is other technology such as Air Independent Propulsion systems that are just as good and a lot less expensive.

Nuclear subs are relatively noisy compared to diesel electric subs - they are also expensive to maintain and operate safely. The only advantage to them is that they can travel vast distance quickly without refueling. For defensive purposes like Brazil's, they are over kill.

2. So maybe there more 'sinister' motives behind it,...
No, I'm not saying Brazil is planning world domination :P, but rather some company, group or person is making a nice profit from this... Ehnn, I dunno.

3. They could have bought one of those russian diesel subs for half the price!
and have money left over for modifications to carry anti-aircraft missiles.
