Rep. Cohen Compares Obama to Jesus
Source: The Hill

Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) compared Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama to Jesus Christ and Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin to Pontius Pilate.

"The parties have differences, but if you want change, you want the Democratic Party," Cohen said Wednesday during a speech on the House floor. "Obama was a community organizer, like Jesus, who our minister prayed about. Pontius Pilate was a governor."

The comment comes in the wake of Palin's Republican National Convention speech in which she criticized Obama's time spent as a community organizer, contrasting it with her experience as a governor. Since then, Republicans have sought to emphasize Palin's experience, relative to Obama.

10. I'm not sure it's really that good.
Just pointing out that Palin is a governor like Pontius Pilate seems to miss that 28 other Democrats in the US are currently governors, as well as our last two Democratic presidents and FDR. There's nothing wrong, in and of itself, with being a Governor, there's just something wrong with Palin.

12. I won't take that bet. I think you are absolutely correct
Within this news story, they'll show Beatle albums being burned in the south after it was found out about the Lennon statement.

6. Cute, but it may hurt Palin's feelings, you know.
Being called insensitive, lipstick, and Pontius Pilate all in one week? Who knew politics could be so mean?

18. I agree
Now this will be in the news along with the statement by the SC Dem Leader - both things taking the focus off of Obama's message.

Besides, can you imagine what we DU'ers would be saying if a Repug mentioned Jesus on the House Floor.

BAD FORM!

20. ENOUGH WITH THE MIXING OF RELIGION AND POLITICS.
Edited on Wed Sep-10-08 04:59 PM by Zhade
This borders on the illegal, if it's not already!

EDIT: After thinking about it further, this IS a violation of the separation of church and state, and here's why: jesus is the central figure in christian mythology. Here, he is spoken of in a positive manner by an elected official. That's an ENDORSEMENT of religion by a government figure!

21. Rep Cohen is a mensch!
He took the Christianist Right's most powerful weapon--The Jesus Card--and used it against the repukes. :yourock:

The puke said this: The National Republican Campaign Committee (NRCC) fired back at Cohen Wednesday afternoon, sending a memo condemning the Tennessee Democrat's remarks.

"The Democrats have lost their minds – and all sense of moral decency," said NRCC communications director Karen Hanretty. "Pontius Pilate sentenced Christ to death on a cross. So, exactly what point was Cohen trying to make?"

Here's the point: Just as Pontius Pilate sentenced Christ to death on the cross after finding Jesus innocent, the repukes are trying to railroad Obama and sentence him to political death
without a shred of solid evidence.

Righties are going to take this way out of context.
