FDA: Infant formula from China tainted by chemical
Source: Cleveland.com

WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal officials say tainted infant formula from China may be on sale at ethnic groceries in this country.

The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday urged U.S. consumers to avoid all infant formula from China, after several brands sold in that country were found to be contaminated with melamine, a chemical used in making plastics.

The FDA says all U.S. brands of infant formula are safe.

But officials are concerned that some Chinese formula may be on sale at ethnic groceries, particularly in places like New York and San Francisco that have large populations of Chinese immigrants. No Chinese brands are approved for export to the United States.

There have been no reports of illnesses in the U.S.

Note: this is the complete story as posted by the A/P

2. Yes, and how could they say at this point no child has been diagnosed
with illness, when a child might have fallen ill as a result of this contamination and have been misdiagnosed.

3. Seem logical to me...
If they were misdiagnosed, then by definition, there has been no reports yet.

I mean seriously, how many pediatricians will even remotely suspect melamine. Now that this information is out there, if there are misdiagnosed cases, they can be reexamined.

9. Anyone with two eyes could have seen this coming at us like a freight train. Worse...
... oftentimes when you read the label for country of origin, you have no idea that the *ingredients* come from China, even if it was assembled/packaged someplace else.

Hekate

:argh:

10. China. a bounty of wonderful products, made with care and quality
And this is the result of the greed of America to buy cheap crap from China

So you think that a country which has so little regard for it's OWN citizens give a a rat's ass about America and the products they ship here?

11. The melamine is a deliberate adulterant that is used to FAKE
the presence of protein. It makes the protein levels look higher on testing than they really are.

CRIMINAL FRAUD. Same as the pet food fiasco, but without the cyanuric acid that made it so deadly.

16. Obama should jump on this
How about a spot that says:

Republican Trade Policy has now resulted in widespread poisoned baby formula in the US.
The same poison has already killed many dogs in this country.

Simple, short and TRUE.
