'High level of melamine' in two Cadbury products
Source: CNN

HONG KONG, China (CNN) -- Hong Kong authorities Sunday announced that two recalled candy products made by British confectioner Cadbury had high levels of melamine.

The industrial chemical has recently been found in Chinese-made milk products that have sickened nearly 53,000 children in China, killing four.

Countries around the world have since banned the import of Chinese products containing milk, or have withdrawn products that contain milk from China -- such as candy -- amid worries they contain melamine.

Last week, Cadbury recalled all of its Chinese-made candy products after preliminary tests showed they contained trace amounts of melamine.

One of the products is exported to Oz; the rest (supposedly) sell only in China.

7. No, American chocolate no longer needs to use milk
Milk is being replaced with cheaper vegetable oils (unless it is still labeled "milk chocolate").

Its still has to use chocolate.

8. Real chocolate doesn't use milk anyway.
Milk chocolate is an abomination fit only for small children with underdeveloped tastes. ;)

11. Chocolate never had to use milk.
Cows' milk is a cheap adulterant and has no place in good chocolate.

What you're thinking of is the replacement of cocoa butter (the waxy fat from cocoa beans) with vegetable oils by Hersheys and other manufacturers of "chocolate" bars that already tasted like crayons.

4. The Cadbury Made In China Was Sold In Asia
The Cadbury sold here is made by Hershey's and according to the license agreement has cocoa butter etc.

10. China Should Shut Down Whoever Produces the Melamine
Go to the source, in other words.

12. It's an industrial byproduct that is supposed to be waste, afaik, & widely produced.
In other words, multiple sources spread out over a huge territory with a population of over a billion.

The addition of melamine to food products is not an accident; it is deliberate adulteration to (a) save pennies on the pound, and (b) cause those products to give false test results for a higher protein content in order to make additional pennies on the pound.

China has just about zero regulations that are enforced. They are not us; they have a different culture with different attitudes. Their own people get sick and die from adulterated products too.

US trade agreements should have acknowledged these facts, but our government and our manufacturers were so enchanted with the low labor costs and ease of production with no OSHA making a fuss over worker safety that they turned a blind eye. It was a choice that is costing the rest of us dearly.

The only US manufacturers of food products who deal with China that are truly serious about adulteration and contamination, afaik, are Orthodox Rabbis who certify food as kosher. They actually have a couple of rabbis who travel around the country tracing every ingredient to its source, and if they are not happy with what they find they don't buy it. They have boots on the ground, as it were, and invest time and energy. They don't take a shrug of ignorance for an answer.

Hekate

13. So, what's the Hebrew word for "kudos"? :)
Good for these rabbis. They're doing what our civil authorities should be doing, were they not being deliberately starved of resources.

I've got to remember to look for that "circle-K" more often.
