Feds to look into Sheriff Scott's comment at Palin rally
Source: News-Press

2:02 p.m. update
A federal investigation is being opened into the actions and comments of Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott at a rally for Gov. Sarah Palin in Estero on Monday.

Erica S. Hamrick, senior attorney at the U.S. Office of Special Counsel, wrote in to complainant Carl Spackler that due to his complaint, her office will be investigating under the Hatch Act, which governs political activities of certain elected officials.

The complainant stated the sheriff violated that act because the sheriff’s office receives federal money, engaged in political activity while on duty, engaged in political activity while in uniform, wore political buttons while on duty and used political influence or authority to interfere with an election.

58. No charges for Hatch violations.
Hatch penalties for local employees are simple. The employee must be fired, or the employing agency must forfeit the qualifying federal grants in an amount equal to two years of the employees salary.

Since the guy is an elected sherriff, my guess is that it will be a cash fine against the department.

59. I think they should focus on his participation at the rally in the first place
Not on his use of Obama's full name. That seems to like too hard a thing to prove--did he use it appropriately or inappriately?
Why was he even there in the first place, in uniform, introducting Palin?

I was a resident of Fort Lauderdale for about 19 years. After spotting jebbies henchmen
putting our ballots in truck mounted shredders in the wee hours of Nov 5 uncounted.
We lived there for another year , all the while complaining to the so called authorities which only got us put on the no fly list, harassed and investigated we moved to a nice redneck area of North Carolina. No drug dealers in front of the house here, no boomboom cars at 3 am, No panhandlers and muggers (mugged 3 times in front of my own place , 3 different places).
No tourists making left turn from the right turn lane.
Almost all of our friends have moved out of Florida too.

I can never get over how sensible she is.

I remember an aunt of mine, who wasn't really troubled by Florida's racism - but gawd she told funny stories about Florida's demographics. When I asked for directions to her house, she said "you will know you have passed from Georgia into Florida because all the cars in Florida are swerving around in their lanes!!"

33. Excellent news in the wake of Sarah Palin's hate-fest in Florida yesterday:
Feds to look into Lee County Sheriff Scott's 'Hussein' Obama comment at Palin rally, 2:20pm October 6, 2008

A federal investigation is being opened into the actions and comments of Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott at a rally for Gov. Sarah Palin in Estero on Monday.

Erica S. Hamrick, senior attorney at the U.S. Office of Special Counsel, wrote in an e-mail to a third party that her office will be investigating under the Hatch Act, which governs political activities of certain elected officials.

The complainant stated the sheriff violated that act because the sheriff’s office receives federal money, engaged in political activity while on duty, engaged in political activity while in uniform, wore political buttons while on duty and used political influence or authority to interfere with an election.

.....

Here's the story from yesterday:

It's like a perfectly replicated pattern. It's blurry, but everyone looks perfectly identical. I know it's not uncommon to edit crowd photos to cover up unwanted background pieces or make them more appealing in some way...is that what happened here?

75. It's all about appearance and attendance.
This has got to be photoshopped - it's way too uniform (no pun intended.) McCain's camp keeps propping up rally attendance numbers in order to look like they're competitive with Obama. They're saying 9000 attended, when the Germaine Arena holds only about 7100 people!! On top of that, Palin's team stated the arena was only 3/4 full. Thst's comes to about 5,300 attendees. Counts by others put the attendance even lower than that.

McCain's campaign mantra is: "If you can't beat him, lie, lie, lie."

94. Actually, it might not be photoshopped
Members of both the Barron Collier High School marching band and the dance team entertained the crowd at the rally. Apparently they were seated right behind the speaker's podium.

Why are hundreds of H.S. students being forced to attend a partisan political rally during school hours (11a.m.) instead of being in class? I wonder if the school would send them to an Obama rally, too?

I like to look around the audience (at pro-mcpain rallies) at various people and wonder wtf they're thinking. Or else, I just surmise they're well-programmed. Or ELSE I decide they're just stupid as dirt. That sounds terrible but we can deal with the enemy only by studying that enemy.

Would be nice if someone published that here so concerned citizens had a proper place to express their contempt for this contemptious bigot.

And then someone could also begin educating the mouthpiece for the state sheriff's association.

Public apology should be demanded as well as a severe Hatch Act fine.

87. This is really interesting to me because he's my County Sheriff.. and Lee County is NOT small....
Lee County Florida is actually quite large overall. Fot Myers is the center of the county government. It's not like this is some northern rural county. This is SW Florida, the land of big money retirement homes. Naples is just south in Collier County. These areas do vote Republican though. But even this area is trending to be a more even vote this year around.

Anyways, the funny part is that my favorite morning radio show the Chuck & Zito show on 99X (Rock station) does mostly comedy, but every week they do the "Scumbag of the week" segment. It is always some rapist, murderer, bank robber, wife beater, etc. who is running from the law. Their guest each week for that segment? Sheriff Scott.

the first thing I thought was that he was involving himself in some very unethical behavior, campaigning while in uniform and representing the sheriff's department, which is what he did when he made those comments while in uniform.

I'm glad he's being investigated and I hope he faces the full extent of the law for his decision.

It is not the first time a Lee County Sheriff has found himself in the national hot seat. Former Sheriff John McDougall twice appeared on the “Today Show,” once denouncing abortion and again to warn tourists away from Lee County, saying it wasn’t safe. In 2000, he was arrested after he left office, when he tried bringing water to dying hospice patient Terri Schiavo in Pinellas Park.

117. As another native born Floridian, let me say I love my state too,
but I grew up in the Ft. Myers/Naples area, and this type of behavior has been going on for many years.

Here's a few examples of what occurred in Ft. Myers on election day 2004 at the 10 precinct polls where I was working for
the Florida Democratic Party. These were all in the predominantly African-American part of the city.

1. The voting location was changed within 30-60 days in the Hispanic section, and when the people arrived at the poll,
there was no one there who spoke Spanish, and it just so happened a rent a cop in uniform was near the door.; 2. Of the
10 precincts, all predominantly black, only one poll was run by African-Americans, and the other 9 were run by folks looking a
lot like Sheriff Scott. 3. At one precinct, a woman who appaeared to be officially directing traffic wore a sign saying:
If you vote for Kerry, you have the blood of 10,000 babies on your hands.

Also near the election: 4. When the Supervisor of Elections found out we were
turning in a large number of early votes from this area, she unilaterally decided to cut off early voting. It wasn't until our
legal team contacted her office indicating it was a statewide decision that she decided it might not be a good idea.
5. An author who wrote a negative book about Bush was not allowed to speak at FGCU, because it was political, but the very next
week they welcomed Dick Cheney.

Remember, Florida suffered under Shurb and PNAC member Jethro Bush. It was dark days in Florida, but these Thuglican areas loved it.

On the bright side, I truly believe the work all of us did in 2004, helped to make the Obama dream possible.

121. DO SOMETHING! Send it to the local newspapers, nat'l blogs etc.
John “Country Last” McCain and Sarah Palin held some truly hate filled rallies on Monday. Here’s a montage from McCain’s hatefest 2008
During this rally, a McCain supporter answers the question posed by Senator Country Last, “Who is the real Barack Obama?” The unmistakable answer: terrorist!
Palin says nothing.
But the current political environment does not excuse remaining silent when a candidate for president is referred to as a “terrorist” in your presence. A desire to win does not excuse remaining silent during a threat on the life of a U.S. Senator at one of your rallies. There are no excuses for evil such as this. John McCain and Sarah Palin, the GOP and all who support them have lost all rights to legitimate argument.
Then we have a Palin fan get real ugly:
Worse, Palin’s routine attacks on the media have begun to spill into ugliness. In Clearwater, arriving reporters were greeted with shouts and taunts by the crowd of about 3,000. Palin then went on to blame Katie Couric’s questions for her “less-than-successful interview with kinda mainstream media.” At that, Palin supporters turned on reporters in the press area, waving thunder sticks and shouting abuse. Others hurled obscenities at a camera crew. One Palin supporter shouted a racial epithet at an African American sound man for a network and told him, “Sit down, boy.”

127. It's so sad to see
an election that stoops to this level. It is insulting to thinking people all over the country. My parents lived in Florida, I visited occasionally but found the intense racism there to be difficult to experience. This sheriff and his employers really need to read up on the Hatch Act. He has every right to have and voice his opinion, however, not when he is in uniform, on duty and his agency is receiving federal funds.
