Georgia sued over voter citizenship verification
Source: Associated Press

NEWNAN, Ga. — Voting rights groups asked a federal judge Friday to stop Georgia’s attempts to verify the identities and citizenship of new voter applicants, arguing they amounted to a “systematic purging” of rolls just weeks before the election.

The groups filed a federal lawsuit Thursday saying that the immigration checks, which involve matching the applications with driver’s license and Social Security data, must first be approved by the Department of Justice.

Georgia is not alone in being questioned about the way it has been verifying voter records and “purging” voters from the rolls before Election Day. Methods are being scrutinized across the country, including in several swing states that could determine who becomes president in a close election.

But Georgia is among several states with a history of discriminatory voting practices that must clear an additional hurdle. It must get federal approval before changing election policy under the Voting Rights Act of 1965 ...

1. I have been on DU for less than 30 minutes, and I have counted
7 different states that have Republicon operatives trying to cause confusion and delays in the American voting system.

All over America, Republicons are trying to prevent people from voting. Republicons are once again Standing In The Way of American Democracy.

If they want a dictatorship they should move to Dubai with Cheney's friends.

2. Let's take up a collection
I don't have a lot of money but I would gladly chip in what I can afford to get these assholes out of the country.

3. They are the minority..have always been the minority
and the ONLY way the win is by cheating....and by having control of media venues to make people THINK they are the majority...and are "honorable"..

It's all been a gigantic SCAM...for THREE DECADES..

enough is enough!

4. If we somehow win the Whitehouse,
in the face of all these "dirty tricks", we must support a requirement that will provide a national I.D. card. Also voting must be standardized so election fraud will be easier to recognize. We also must have foolproof paper ballots for every election.

5. No, I am totally against a Nat'l ID card, but am for people using
their driver's license or State ID card in a swipe type of system. I dunno - I'd be willing to go Purple Finger in order to stop this nonsense and grown adults vote. Why we have to jump through hoops with these stupid registrations is beyond me.

7. Please explain to me how what Ga. is doing differs from what's
done in all the other states. I've lived in 4 different states, including Ga, and I've always had to show my DL for ID. Even when we lived in Pgh. and kew all the poll workersbecause we'd been voting at the same place for 25 years. They look at you, smile, say "Hi Xxxxxx, how are you? Let me see your license." tWe voted absentee this year, and on the outside mailer envelope where you have to sign, it clearly states "Your signature will be verified with the records on file with us."

I WANT to sympathize with you, but I don't understand the problem?

9. there are different forms of ID acceptable
here in GA, for example, you can vote with your state ID card, etc. Insisting illegally on DL is a very good way of disenfranchising millions. Many African Americans here do not have a drivers license. they don't have a car. They take the bus everywhere.

Do you know how long we spent registering some of these people? And then getting them the proper ID. That isn't easy for anyone, but if you don't have a car? It's a huge deal. These folks went WAY out of their way to make sure they had the right to vote! And now, the rules are being changed? When it's too late to get the ID they now insist upon?

It makes me cry. I wish everyone could have met some of the folks I met here. Hard working, caring and dirt poor. DIRT poor, because their elected officials don't give a shit about them. finally, an election where someone might give a shit. Maybe they can get ahead of the bills long enough to get their car working again or what have you. These people planned their lives around voting this year.

I am so fucking angry right now.....

11. to be clear, I am jnot sure what they are doing in this case
it says "immigration status checks" -- but what we have seen here is asking for DL in poorer districts, etc- things that are not required by law.

this whole thing gets me burned up -- as we know the DOJ has been frothing at the mouth to find voter fraud for years and has never found one instance of it. yet, election fraud continues to go by unnoticed. well, no - ignored -- by the partisan DoJ.

I hate seeing people lose their right to vote. Isn't that what this country is built on?

Hey, no taxation without representation. IF they tell you you can't vote....why should you pay taxes?

Just asking.:-)

8. no need to worry oursselves over how to prove who we are
there are no cases of voter fraud -- that is why all of this bs is ridiculous. illegal immigrants are NOT lining up at the doors to the polling places, casting their votes of asperison against the conservatives who feed them. (total sarcasm)

ELECTION fraud.

we need paper ballots.

I am in GA and if these asshats think they are stealing this state AGAIN, they have another thing coming. They not only put vote switching device on the Deibold, but also keep African Americans from voting in the thousands. Not this time.

Notice to you vote-stealing kriminals: How dare you feel entitled to take the vote away from someone based on how you think they are going to vote? And how dare you take advantage of a group of people due to their perceived lower economic status? People, I might add, whom you as a group have already screwed over so badly I don't know how you sleep at night.

FUCK YOU, Pukes.

I will stand outside the poll here with my video camera and if I see ONE person turned away, after I spent months registering voters here who have never been involved in this process before, people who have never felt engaged enough or as if it made one whit of difference to them, if I see ONE person turned away....I am going to plaster that video all over the universe.

ELECTION FRAUD, COMING SOON TO A POLLING PLACE NEAR YOU, by the dying GOP
