Ex-Official: Palin Lied, Threw Me Under Bus

Fired by Palin, Walt Monegan Says He Wants to Clear His Good Name

The man at the center of the Sarah Palin "Troopergate" scandal says the Alaska governor lied about him, and he wants his reputation back.

Last month, Palin called her former Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan "insubordinate" and accused him of having had a "rogue mentality" while he was part of her administration. She leveled those charges in a filing to the state Personnel Board, justifying her dismissal of Monegan.

Now Monegan has formally complained about those accusations to the same panel, and is asking its members to hold a fact-finding hearing "to clear his good name, remove the stigma he has suffered, and redress his reputational interests."

...

The filing counts four different explanations from Palin for why she fired Monegan, and rebuts each. It also slights Palin aide Randy Ruaro for accusing Monegan of "going off the reservation."

That was both unsubstantiated as well as a "clumsy" choice of words, wrote Feldman, noting Monegan's Tlingit Native heritage, and the state's large Native American population.

2. Good. This puts Palin's Personnel Board on the spot.
The Board members were appointed by Palin, but they still have their reputations to be concerned about.

10. Only one was appointed by Palin, and that was a re-appointment
All three members were originally appointed by Gov. Frank Murkowski, whom Palin defeated in the 2006 Republican primary. She inherited those three members and re-appointed one of them in 2008.

That said, because these people are gubernatorial appointees, I wouldn't hold out a lot of hope for what the Personnel Board might do. The Branchflower Report is probably the high-water mark for Troopergate, at least in terms of what happens in time to affect the election.

Gov. Sarah Palin's former public safety commissioner says the governor smeared him and he wants a hearing to clear his name.
Walt Monegan on Monday asked the state personnel board to allow him a chance to disprove the vice presidential nominee's assertion he was a "rogue" and insubordinate commissioner. The board is investigating Palin's July dismissal of Monegan.

"Governor Palin's public statements accusing Mr. Monegan of serious misconduct were untrue and they have stigmatized his good name, severely damaged -- and continue to damage -- his reputation, and impaired his ability to pursue future professional employment in law enforcement and related fields," said the hearing request filed by Monegan's lawyer, Jeff Feldman.

Palin's lawyer, Thomas Van Flein, said the governor didn't defame Monegan.

"We welcome the opportunity to put on all of our evidence regarding Mr. Monegan's performance," he said. "Whether the personnel board will, or can, allow this, remains unknown."

5. She's going to end up in so much legal hot water
by the time everything winds out. This, the ethics charge itself, the sports complex and her house. I see legal bills for a long time. Probably impeachment in AK too.
