Guards' union drops Schwarzenegger recall effort
Source: Associated Press

SACRAMENTO (AP) — The powerful union that represents California prison guards dropped its recall campaign against Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Thursday.

California Correctional Peace Officers Association spokesman Lance Corcoran said the union decided instead to concentrate on issues on next month's ballot. And even if a recall succeeded, it would knock Schwarzenegger out of office only a few months early, Corcoran said.

The union launched its campaign last month in frustration over its lack of a state contract since 2006. Union leaders accuse Schwarzenegger of trying to break the union, which he denies.

The secretary of state last week rejected the union's first recall petition on technical grounds. The union had until today to submit a new petition if it chose to proceed.

3. I dislike Schwarzenegger
But the prison guard union is just a bunch of overpaid thugs. The prison industrial complex.

6. Prison guards
Unless you have personal experience with guards, generalizing like that is just wrong. It is most likely that they just get up and go to work like any of the rest of us, to make a living. Now if you want to blast private for profit prison corporations, you have my full support.

7. Obviously you aren't from CA
The prison guards union as opposed to individual guards themselves, is indeed a thuggish organization. They have used campaign contributions verging on outright bribery with a succession of politicians of both parties to secure outrageous salary increases for their members. Most elected officials are scared shitless of them because they have so much dough.

In a death match with Shickelgruber it's a close call but I'd like to see him slapped into place. We can deal with guards when the state runs out of money.

4. Good call. It would have cost the State a bundle and likely been ineffective.
