Iraq attack kills three US troops

Three US soldiers guarding an Iraqi children's hospital have been killed and four injured in a grenade attack, the US military has said.

The attack occurred shortly before midday in Baqubah, northeast of Baghdad.

All the soldiers were from the 4th Infantry Division, which was involved in an operation on Thursday against Iraqis suspected of being Saddam Hussein's bodyguards.

The casualties - whose names have not yet been released - were taken to an American medical facility, the military said.

telephone interview on CNN that everything is going fine and the killing of Saddam's 2 sons (and 1 grandson, 14 years old), seems to have worked to stop the guerilla attacks.

PS. I've just made my first Flash in honor of the people who really need help in Liberia. (Very basic).

5. This can't be true...............
all hostilities were to cease when the Oodie and Cootie were killed. There would be no resistance left. Mission accomplished, I saw Bush land that jet on the Carrier. This must be Democrap misinformation to damage our great leader...................This sucks. When are we going to get the hell out of there? Nobody deserves to die for Bush's fuckup. It's about time to take to the streets again.

we are fast approaching a post-war war body count that will exceed the number killed during the war, pre-aircraft carrier landing. What a sick, twisted head of state.

11. And it's NOT just the number KIA that tells the story here
...or even killed and wounded. The gauge of how this is going is the number of attacks. That's what tells you whether the story that it's a tiny hard core of Baathist "dead-enders" really covers what's going on and what kind of "progress" we're making. I can't seem to find that stat any more, but I know the number was something like 485 back in May. It's obviously not something the War Party wants us to know, but they have been acknowledging, in their vague way, an "increasing" number of attacks, so I suspect the number is approaching 1000 by now...? Some DUer had posted the stat on this a while back, but I can't seem to find a link or bookmark for it. Anybody know? I was just checking http://www.iraqbodycount.net but they don't seem to have this info.

29. And reports said 25+ attacks per day. . .
a week or so back. Sorry, don't have a link. . . but I remember it was better than an attack an hour. I wonder if there's been a drop or if the news is putting a spin to it.

30. 12 attacks per day? They're probably just counting combat attacks.
The other dozen or so attacks per day were non-combat attacks, no doubt.

And none of these men have been killed either, they are just hibernating until February 2nd, when they will emerge and look for their shadow.

14. "These are the types of things Iraqis should be doing"
Remember this statement after the soldier was killed guarding the Baghdad Museum? What Iraqis are going to want to do this type of security work? If I've got the administration's "plan" correct, Iraqis do security while we take care of the oil industry and reconstruction projects.

May God keep them and care for the families of these soldiers.

20. It isn't what we've been led to expect.
It's too early to tell whether killing Hussein's sons will slow the guerilla insurgency. So far, it seems to have added fuel to the fire. It could be a coincidence or it could be some other factor.

I read that some think the elimination of Saddam and sons could lead to increased attacks. The reasoning was that the Iraqis really have two groups they want to get rid of: Saddam's Baathists and the United States. Once they believe Saddam is gone, some sides could (ironically) decide to rally against the U.S.

Another possibility that occurs to me is that the elimination of Saddam and his heirs could pave the way for a new Saddam. Maybe some of the guerilla leaders now see a job opening and will fight that much harder.

I think we won't know until a week or two after Saddam is out of the picture.

27. Saw an article on Common Dreams (I think)
to that very effect. It said that the Iraqi people hate Saddam and they hate the United States. They only reason they're tolerating our presence (to the extent that they are), it that we're hunting down Saddam. Once we eliminate him, they'll only have Americans to hate.

My take is that the Shiite majority will turn on us -- big time -- when they know that Saddam is gone for sure.

24. We desecrated the corpses.
We didn't bury quickly and we put makeup on them.

NOT DONE. People who weren't impressed with our sensitivity in the first place are now totally offended.

Not to mention, it was the job of the Iraqi men to take out their oppressors, not ours. So they have their cajones to reclaim. What better way than killing Americans?

This is very sad. Seeing these headlines every morning is just about the saddest way to start the day that I can imagine. Forget about politics, just think about the families of the soldiers over there who have to wake up each morning and wonder whether their loved ones are among those killed and injured.

28. Bu$h will pay with the only thing that is dear to him: POWER.
Edited on Sat Jul-26-03 12:04 PM by DemoTex
Bu$h's popularity orgy is over. Period. His ratings will sink like a rock as our troops continue to die in Iraqnam. If these killings continue there will be nothing Rove can do to save Bu$h.

I think there is a good possibility Bu$h will not be the GOP nominee in 2004. Look for a LBJ-like move next spring: "I will not seek, nor will I accept, my parties nomination for President of the United States." (LBJ- shortly after Tet '68).

Having said that, I would be willing to keep Bu$h for four more years if he would withdraw all troops from Iraq and Afganistan tomorrow. But he won't do that. Let him be, instead, disgraced, cashiered, and convicted. The Bu$h regime's evil, truly, knows no bounds.

31. “We all agree that we need to fight the Americans,”
Edited on Sat Jul-26-03 05:44 PM by dArKeR
Ali Abbas, whose sister is a nurse in the hospital, said he hated the Americans but did not support this attack. “We all agree that we need to fight the Americans,” he said. “But did they really have to hit them in a children’s hospital?”

Soldiers from the 4th Infantry Division in Tikrit said they were now facing attacks during the day as well as at night, and that guerrillas were increasingly bold and confident.
