Besieged residents of Liberia's capital came under new, deadly shelling Saturday, with a mortar slamming into a church harboring thousands of refugees, killing at least three and wounding about 55 others.
It was the second deadly shelling in two days of public buildings overflowing with refugees in Monrovia, target of a week-old offensive that is the latest round in insurgents' two-month battle to take Liberia's capital and topple its president, President Charles Taylor.
The Greater Refuge Temple, on a hill overlooking Monrovia's rebel-held port and heavily contested bridges leading from it, has taken in 5,000-6,000 people, many from outside the capital, since rebels opened their drive for the city in June, the Rev. Michael Chea said.
Fighting raged at the port overnight, and witnesses said five shells slammed into the ground around the church about 4 a.m. A sixth hit the church building, exploding among the refugees bedded down for the night.
