In Iowa, McCain dismisses sour poll numbers (MTP interview)
Edited on Sun Oct-26-08 09:15 AM by maddezmom
Source: AP

WATERLOO, Iowa -- Republican presidential nominee John McCain is dismissing the sour poll numbers that show him trailing in his race for the White House against Democrat Barack Obama and says his campaign is "doing fine."

McCain, interviewed Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press, said his campaign has pulled closer to Obama's in the last week. And McCain says he'll continue to be "very competitive" in many of the states the two senators are focusing on.

Recent polls have shown McCain trailing Obama both nationally and some of the battleground states. A Newsweek poll released Saturday showed McCain behind by 13 percentage points.

McCain says Bush failed in number of areas
Dismissing poll results, GOP candidate insists ‘we’re doing fine’

WATERLOO, Iowa - Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the Republican presidential nominee, said Sunday that he was a proud Republican but believed the Bush administration had failed in a number of areas, asking voters to remember that “I’m not George Bush.”

In recent days, the McCain campaign has aggressively run away from Bush and his unpopularity with voters, blaming him for the economic downturn and a record national debt. In an interview with NBC News last week, McCain’s running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, identified Bush’s unpopularity as the campaign’s most serious obstacle.

Speaking Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” McCain acknowledged that he has voted with Bush more than 90 percent of the time, but he said that on the most important issues — U.S. strategies in Iraq, climate change and the economy, “I was not popular in my own party.”

“I respect the president of the United States, of course,” McCain said in the interview with NBC’s Tom Brokaw. But “there were a number of disagreements over philosophy.”

3. McCain Insists Obama Lead Narrowing, Says Voters Will Be "Up Late" On Election Night
(RTTNews) - With just nine days to go until the election, Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain (R-AZ | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) appeared on NBC News' Meet the Press with Tom Brokaw Sunday morning.

McCain conceded that he is trailing in most polls, but insisted that the margin was narrowing and that voters will "be up late" on November 4 as the election results pour in.

Against the backdrop of the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, McCain criticized the economic plan of his opponent Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating).

Both McCain and Obama supported the recently passed $700 government bailout of the financial system, but McCain refused to back away from Republican attempts to label Obama as a "socialist" with the "most liberal voting record in the Senate."

McCain drew a distinction between his approach to the government's role in managing the economy, acknowledging government must "intervene in times of crisis," but chided Obama for his voting record and desire to "spread the wealth."

Throughout the campaign, McCain has been dogged by his attachment to deeply unpopular sitting president George W. Bush, whose approval ratings hovered between 25 and 30 percent as of last week.

6. McCain Disputes Polls That Show Obama With Big Leads (then cites polls)
Source: Wall Street Journal

October 26, 2008, 11:05 am

John McCain disputed the polls that show him trailing Barack Obama by double digits, saying that he would rather rely on his “senses” and is encouraged by the enthusiasm at his events.

“Those polls have consistently shown me much further behind than we actually are,” said McCain during the interview here with veteran journalist Tom Brokaw.

Major polls show McCain trailing Obama by between three to 14 percentage points. A Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll taken this week gave Obama a 10-point lead over his Republican rival. McCain, however, cited a Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby daily tracking poll released Sunday that showed Obama’s lead shrinking to just five points from 12 points this Thursday. “We’re going to do well in this campaign,” McCain went on. “We’re going to win it. But it’s going to be tight.”

“I choose to trust my senses as well as polls. In the enthusiasm, at almost all of our campaign events is at a higher level than I’ve ever seen and I’ve been in a lot of presidential campaigns,” McCain said. “I see intensity out there and I see passion. So we’re very competitive here and I’m very happy with where we are and I’m very proud of the campaign I’ve run.”

10. Yes and he aired Limbaugh's "ITS ABOUT RACE" on national TV
and then asked McCain to comment on it which he, of course, didn't do. But it got on the air just like his campaign wanted.

8. John you're losing BECAUSE you rely on your "senses."
Your "senses" told you to pick Sarah Palin.

Your "senses" told you to suspend your campaign.

Your "senses" told you to call Obama "that one."

Your "senses" told you to believe Ashley Todd's crazy story.

Isn't it a little bit possible that your "senses" just aren't that good?

12. The early reports were that Brokaw was his usual fawning sycophant self
I thought Brokaw was acceptably level and detached, and that McCain himself did not do himself any favors with this outing ....

Further: Todd, O'Donnell (?) and Cook were reasonable as well .... They agree it is pretty damned near impossible for McCain to close the gap .....

19. McCain guarantees victory
Source: Politico

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that he can “guarantee” a win on Nov. 4 in a squeaker victory that won’t be clear until late that night.

McCain spoke amid signs of a tightening race, and reports of renewed determination among his staff, which is badly outgunned in both money and manpower.

“I guarantee you that two weeks from now, you will see this has been a very close race, and I believe that I'm going to win it,” McCain told interim "Meet" moderator Tom Brokaw. “We're going to do well in this campaign, my friend. We're going to win it, and it's going to be tight, and we're going to be up late.”

McCain was down just 5 points in the Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby poll released Sunday, with Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) leading by 49 percent to 44 percent among likely voters in the daily tracking poll, which has a margin of error of 2.9 points.

30. I don't know but 19 have no paper...

VerifiedVoting.org, our partners, and voters across the country have successfully persuaded the majority of state governments to pass legislation or establish regulations to require VVPR. 31 states, with more than half the U.S. population, now have such a requirement. We need your help to make sure the voters in the remaining 19 states are protected, through Federal or state legislation.

You can look here and see what kind of voting systems each state uses, and each county in each state..

Given the polls a win seems unlikely.
Unlikely if everyone sticks to playing "fair."

Maybe he knows he'll cheat his way to a win???
If he knows he will cheat, he knows he will win.

Would be nice to have a president for a change, though instead of yet another resident.

I liked the McFailin remark.

This is the equivalent of Barack going to Kansas. It would be a complete waste of the precious time we have left. McCain is basically out of options at this point, but the fact that he is wasting his time in states like Iowa is good news for us.
