Police: Crowd for Obama rally tops 100,000

Associated Press - October 26, 2008 3:14 PM ET

DENVER (AP) - Police estimate the crowd for a rally by Sen. Barack Obama at well over 100,000.

Police spokesman Sonny Jackson says the crowd Sunday spilled out of Civic Center Park to the State Capitol and onto surrounding streets as Obama visited Colorado nine days before the election.

Obama is rallying voters to get to the polls before Nov. 4 in his effort to win a state that twice sided with President Bush.

After the rally Denver, Obama's heading to Fort Collins, where he will hold another rally on the oval on the Colorado State University campus.

FORT COLLINS — Two lines of Barack Obama supporters are waiting for the gates to open at the Democratic presidential candidate's rally this afternoon at Colorado State University.

~snip~

One line, for those who RSVP'd to the event was about five blocks long, while a second line for the general public was estimated to be about a mile long as it winds through campus.

Obama Chants in Spanish With Denver Crowd of More Than 100,000

By Kim Chipman and Hans Nichols

Oct. 26 (Bloomberg) -- Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama, working to win over Latino voters in Colorado, chanted ``si se puede,'' or ``yes we can,'' in Spanish along with an outdoor crowd in Denver estimated at more than 100,000.

Obama has a 12 percentage-point lead over Republican rival John McCain among likely voters in Colorado, according to a Rocky Mountain News/CBS4 News poll. The state hasn't picked a Democrat for president since 1992. Denver police chief Gerry Whitman estimated the crowd at more than 100,000, which campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki said was Obama's largest U.S. turnout. A McCain speech two days ago in Denver drew 3,000 supporters.

48. When I got back from the rally here in St Louis....
I was asked about how many people were there and estimated about 30- 40 thousand and was flabbergasted when I saw the aerial photos and announcements of 150,000.

ground level is a very different from view.

13. One of the Kerry/Edwards rallies was 70K during the 2004 election.
Democratic candidates have had massive support for all of the elections since 2000. The problem has been the electronic voting machines and central tabulators that have been tinkered with by republicans...the party that does NOT believe in democracy.

51. hate to think this, but have the election stealers thought about the sheer numbers of Obama support?
I mean.. do they really think that people won't march in the streets in numbers larger than that crowd, in each city, if they succeed in stealing this one? I just don't think millions of people are going to be like.. 'oh well, John McCain won", better luck next time.

60. Check out this link to photo of Kerry & Springsteen in Madison, WI
http://www.commondreams.org/headlines04/1029-03.htm

This proves your point. It was such a beautiful photo then. Now, here in Denver we have yet another great photo. Let's hope America becomes as great as its people with the election of a president who is a true leader, Obama. McLiar who helped Charles Keating steal $3.4 billion from America can never lead our country.

I went to the link and clicked for the large version and made it my desktop - stretched. It looks fabulous!

The area is large there between the Capitol building and Denver's City & County Building. A beautiful park atmosphere in between.

The weather is crisp and gorgeous in the Denver area today. I couldn't attend but having this photo has me right there! :D

It will be the first time anyone in our family has gotten to see him. My son, who lives in Denver, is the only one in my family who lives in a state Obama has visited. The rest of us live in "safe states" so we'll probably never get to see him.

Edited on Sun Oct-26-08 07:24 PM by NOW tense
there was a line about 3/4 mile long. We ended up cutting into line after walking through campus to get in. I know it was bad of me, but I have a lot of experience at Panic shows. So it was a really big crowd, some came just to see history others to cheer on Sen. Obama. I overheard one college student ask another if it was going to change his vote. The kid in the Texas longhorns hoodie said "no". It was really good to see that many people in Northern Colorado show up for a Democrat. I would estimate the people inside the venue to be around 12,000 but I'm not an expert.
