Reuters Evacuates NYC Newsroom in Powder Scare

About 140 staffers evacuated Reuters News' New York City newsroom on Monday after an editor opened an envelope with an unidentified white powder in it, authorities said.

Police ordered the evacuation of the 19th-floor newsroom after an editor opened an envelope and a ``puff of powder'' came out of it, Reuters spokeswoman Jolie Hunt said.

Police said they were investigating the unidentified white substance, discovered at about 12:45 p.m.

The New York Times evacuated its Manhattan newsroom last week after an employee opened a powder-filled envelope, containing a substance that was not believed to be dangerous.
