I want to send him/her a campaign donation.

If he wins and goes to jail, can't Palin appoint whoever she pleases to the post? Can she put the Dude in there? Yikes.

124. My guess is no jail time and he may get close to getting re-elected
After all this is the state that elected Sarah Palin. Hopefully he will not get re-elected. But I have no doubt a lot of Alaskans have no problem with cheating on their taxes, or lying to the government.

That would be a sad mistake...
Alaska was a pristine land of near perfection when it was bought by us fare and square, then a bunch of bigoted rednecks invaded in force for gold furs and the rest of the vast resources of this wilderness who now think they own it. It is a state of the United States and that is that. We can never concede it to anybody.

164. He can get elected ...

But Congress doesn't have to seat him.

And then we can play this nice little game with Ms. Palin, who by then will be governor again, about who gets to take the seat, and she'll pretend she really does have power over the Senate after all, and she will be reminded that she doesn't.

But I doubt he's going to get reelected now. The polls are close as it is with Begich hold a slight lead. This should be just enough to break the virtual tie.

201. Amazingly, he is. Ironically, he won't be able to vote
for himself. The law allows a convicted felon to run for and (if successful) even take a Senate seat, yet the law doesn't allow a convicted felon to vote.
Pretty much shows that the lawmakers were convinced of their own innate goodness. HA! They should read a newspaper now and then.

156. Will not happen
His sentencing date is Feb 2009. Shrub will pardon him before he ever gets to sentencing. This might shame enough voters in Alaska to not send a convicted felon back to the Senate.

P.S.
I also expect a full pardon for Scooter Libby and a whole host of other criminals.

Sen. Stevens found guilty of scheming to hide gifts
A jury has found U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska guilty on all seven counts of making false statements on Senate disclosure forms. Stevens, 84, is the longest-serving Republican senator in history. He requested a speedy trial in hopes of clearing his name before Election Day. He is locked in a tight race with Democrat Mark Begich as he seeks to retain the Senate seat he has held since 1968. developing story

Stevens guilty of felony charges

Ted Stevens, the longest-serving Senate Republican in history and patriarch of Alaska politics, was found guilty of felony charges for making false statements.

The verdict could spell the end of a 40-year Senate career for a man who rose to be one of the most dominant figures in the upper chamber and who helped transform Alaska in its 50 years of statehood. The verdict was reached after the jury deliberated since Wednesday and found the 84-year-old senator guilty of failing to report more than $250,000 in gifts from Bill Allen, the former head of Veco Corp., and other friends.

And the well-known NYC stagehand, "Beef" does the best Jackie Gleason impersonation on the planet, bar none. People look forward to working with him just for that.

161. She can't appoint anyone to the senate seat
There has to be a special election and it's too late to get one going even if Sen. Stevens resigned right now. The best way for the Alaska State Republicans to kept the seat would be for Sen. Stevens to resign today (he won't) and to do a write in campaign for Sarah Palin (she won't approve it) or Todd Palin. The Todd Palin option would probably boost the McCain/Palin ticket even.

As you've probably heard, though, not only is Sen. Stevens NOT resigning, but he is appealing the verdict and asking for a new trial based on prosecutorial misconduct (he seems to have a case for that.)

We just need to hope that his felony verdict propels Begich to a win.

34. 'Possible verdict' in (Ted) Stevens' corruption trial
Edited on Mon Oct-27-08 02:54 PM by brooklynite
Source: AP

WASHINGTON (AP) — Jurors in Sen. Ted Stevens' corruption trial passed a note with "a potential verdict" to a federal judge Monday, a courthouse spokesman said.

The jury has been beset by problems since deliberations began Wednesday. Courthouse spokesman Sheldon Snook said the panel sent a note Monday. Attorneys for both sides were called back to court Monday for a reading of the note.

The ambiguity of the note's description, though, apparently leaves open the possibility that jurors have been unable to reach a unanimous verdict. If so, the judge likely would send them back to continue deliberating.

In a tight election year, the verdict has the potential to alter the nation's political landscape. The Senate's longest-serving Republican is fending off an aggressive Democratic challenger. If Stevens is convicted, it would hurt his chance of keeping a seat he's held for generations. And it could push Democrats toward a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate.

Election 2008: Alaska Senate
Alaska Senate: Stevens 49%, Begich 48%

The U.S. Senate race in Alaska remains a dead heat. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in the state finds incumbent Republican Ted Stevens barely leading Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich 49% to 48%.

Last month, Begich was on top 48% to 46%.

Stevens guilty of felony charges
By Manu Raju
Posted: 10/27/08 04:02 PM

Ted Stevens, the longest-serving Senate Republican in history and patriarch of Alaska politics, was found guilty of felony charges for making false statements.

The verdict could spell the end of a 40-year Senate career for a man who rose to be one of the most dominant figures in the upper chamber and who helped transform Alaska in its 50 years of statehood. The verdict was reached after the jury deliberated since Wednesday and found the 84-year-old senator guilty of failing to report more than $250,000 in gifts from Bill Allen, the former head of Veco Corp., and other friends.

60. Jury finds Stevens guilty on corruption charges
Source: CNN

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A jury found U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska guilty Monday of all seven counts in his federal corruption trial.

Sen. Ted Stevens leaves the federal courthouse last week with his daughter Beth Stevens.

The jury found Stevens guilty of "knowingly and willfully" scheming to conceal on Senate disclosure forms more than $250,000 in home renovations and other gifts from an Alaska-based oil industry contractor.

The jury began deliberations at noon Wednesday, but started anew Monday morning when an alternate replaced a juror who left town abruptly last week because of the death of her father.

The verdict comes after jurors in the corruption trial of Sen. Ted Stevens spotted a discrepancy Monday between the government's indictment of the veteran Alaska Republican and a key piece of evidence.

http://www.adn.com/news/politics/fbi/stevens/story/569134.html
A jury has found U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens guilty of all seven counts of lying on his financial disclosure forms.

It is the highest-profile felony conviction in a sweeping four-year federal investigation into corruption in Alaska politics, and an almost unprecedented conviction by a jury of a sitting U.S. senator.

Jurors found that Stevens willfully filed false financial disclosure forms that hid such gifts as the renovations that doubled his home in size. Those gifts, valued at as much as $250,000 over seven years, came mostly from his former friend Bill Allen, the star prosecution witness in Stevens' trial and the former owner of Veco Corp. The oil-field services company was one of Alaska's largest private employers before Allen, caught up in the federal corruption probe, was forced to sell it last year.

Jurors returned the verdict just before 4 p.m. Washington time (noon in Alaska ).

Ted Stevens found guilty in corruption case

WASHINGTON (AP) — Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens has been convicted of lying about free home renovations and other gifts he received from a wealthy oil contractor.

The Senate's longest-serving Republican, Stevens was found guilty on all seven counts of making false statements on Senate financial documents.

The verdict throws the upcoming election into disarray. Stevens is fighting off a challenge from Democrat Mark Begich and must now either drop out or continue campaigning as a convicted felon.

The trial hinged on the testimony of Stevens' longtime friend, who testified that his employees dramatically remodeled the senator's home.

Stevens faces up to five years in prison on each count ............

83. The question is:
He should be taken into custody immediately or at the very least sent to a half way house until sentencing. Almost every person CONVICTED in a Federal trail loses their freedom during the wait between verdict and sentence...they sure as hell better not give him special treatment. I want him to spend some jail time between now and when Bush pardons him on November 5th.

Although Daniel Inouye has many supporters, when you look at his behavior as a Senator for Hawaii, he appears only slightly less onerous than Ted Stevensm his self proclaimed close friend.

Daniel Inouye has continued to recklessly feed at the trough of the Military Industrial complex, endangering the State of Hawaii by creating the most Militarized State in the Nation.

As for all the cheerleaders that claim the Military Economy is what keeps Hawaii strong, it is clear that it is just another Lobbying effort, and the whole tourist industry is just a cover for Military control of the Islands.

Daniel Inouye is not a Democrat, he is a DLC stooge, Republican-Lite.

She didn’t expose it, we already knew it was there- for decades.

It’s Alaska. Stevens will either retain his seat or he’ll be replaced by someone else who is crooked. That’s just how it is.
