Poll: Geography, gender, race split presidential vote John McCain, Barack Obama (in NC)
Source: wral.com (Raleigh, NC)

Raleigh, N.C. — Geography is playing as much a role in the presidential election in North Carolina as the more usual dividing lines of race and gender, according to a WRAL News poll released Monday.

...

A boundary line between McCain and Obama can be drawn down the middle of the state, according to the poll. Obama is favored by voters in the eastern half of the state – Triangle voters give him a 59 to 36 percent margin – while McCain gets the nod in the western half, including the Charlotte and Triad metro areas.

"Eastern North Carolina has counties with large African-American populations, which is where Obama is getting his support," Davis said. "On the other hand, the western counties have more older and more conservative voters, so they're trending toward McCain."

This is why the endorsement from Junior Johnson is so important today! He is from western rural North Carolina and is greatly admired by the white male rural demographic that leans toward McCain.

2. Exception in WNC
There is one small but very vocal, very hard working patch of Western NC, and that is Asheville NC! We are blue & proud, and 28,000 of us turned up to hear Barack speak a few weeks ago. We are working hard, spreading the word, donating and volunteering. Our college students here @ UNCA have worked their butts off for the campaign...so please don't count all of us in WNC out. There are some smart people here. We are just surrounded by red.

4. If this report is true then Obama should only be getting 15%
of NC vote because that's what their population percentage of the state is. I may be off but it is not enough with out white voters to carry the state or any state for that matter including GA.

10. I agree that the guy quoted in the article oversimplifies.
Obviously, Obama is getting an enormous amount of support from whites in North Carolina and all over the country. Unfortunately, he does have to overcome the entrenched Republican vote in some of the rural areas.

8. It's a Mason-Dixon poll.

I can guarantee you that Obama will carry Guilford County, probably Forsyth, too.

12. I was just in Eastern NC about ten days ago
and I didn't see a lot of Obama bumper stickers or yard signs. Got off the Interstate, and took some of the side roads, too. I like picking up local barbecue sauces at the grocery stores when I travel down there.
