AP poll shows Obama backers gleeful, McCain's glum
Source: AP

WASHINGTON (AP) — That smiling guy walking down the street? Odds are he's a Barack Obama backer. The grouchy looking one? Don't ask, and don't necessarily count on him to vote on Tuesday, either.

More John McCain supporters feel glum about the presidential campaign while more of Obama's are charged up over it, according to an Associated Press-Yahoo! News poll released Saturday.

The survey shows McCain backers have become increasingly upset in recent weeks, a period that has seen Obama take a firm lead in many polls. One expert says the contrasting moods could affect how likely the two candidates' supporters are to vote on Election Day, possibly dampening McCain's turnout while boosting Obama's.

While 43 percent of the Democrat Obama's backers said they are excited over the campaign, just 13 percent of McCain's said so, according to the survey of adults, conducted by Knowledge Networks. Six in 10 Obama supporters said the race interests them, compared to four in 10 backing McCain, the Republican senator from Arizona.

1. I have a feeling that a lot of Repubs are gonna sit this one out. They won't vote Democratic
but know, in their "hearts," that Palin/McCain are a couple of dangerous losers, so they'll
just stay home and watch Fox all day.

7. I think you are on the right track when it comes to who Barack's
campaign refers to as "hard" Republicans. However, some "soft" Republicans will probably cross over for Barack.

9. When you talk about "hard" Republicans, are you referring to Rich Lowry?

12. Rich Lowery
is a soft doughy Republican. He will spend the next four years fantasizing to Sarah Palin's winking.

14. He'll move to Alaska and buy a house a stone's throw from the Governor's mansion just so he can be
near her.

He'll also buy a littly shanty in Wasilla, just in case....

24. I know a few "soft" Republicans that have switched to Obama just in the last few
days. Very surprised.

I have to admit that listening to Barack really calms me down.

Everything's gonna be okay. (I hope.)

6. Only 43% of Obama backers are excited over the campaign?
That's hard to believe. There must be a difference between those who simply intend to vote for Obama and those who are actively backers or supporters. My guess would be that the vast majority of those who are actually Obama backers or supporters are excited with the campaign.

13. Even more shocking
is that there are 13% of McSame voters who are excited or gleeful. That's way higher than I expected. Are 13% of McSame voters on really powerful drugs?

I wish they had measured or surveyed giddiness, elation, exuberant and bursting with happiness. Maybe gleeful didn't quite express what the rest of the Obama supporters were feeling

23. I support him and I'm voting as soon as it opens Tuesday, but I'm worried.
I'd like to see a 20 point lead before I feel safe. I won't feel like it could happen till it does because you just never know what can happen when voting starts. It doesn't help that I live in red state hell either, everyone I know has shown their hate mongering attitudes. I live in a rural area though and I won't have any problem voting first thing and that's what I'm going to do :)

8. People who support McLame......
are people who walk around with a glum look on their faces all the time anyway, so how will things be different? Have you ever met some of these people? They have a giant chip on their shoulders for life in general, and they can't stand to see anyone that doesn't fall within their "group" of white people with a sense of entitlement have a chance at a decent life.

11. I want to be gleeful but I wont let myself until I know its safe
The Obama supporters I talk to are all very very cautiously optimistic. I wear by Obama pin EVERYWHERE and a lot of people come up and talk to me about it saying "I like your pin" and it always brings on a discussion on how much we LOVE Barak but it is always followed by a comment like "I am so nervous. I wish Tuesday would come already". Or "I can't sleep at night I am so worried". or "My small business is just hanging on right now. if Mccain wins i will have to pack it in" and on and on and on. people ar so worried about the Rebups stealing the election. I try and reassure reminding people that Barak has worked too hard to let them steal this victory rom him and remind him that barak is no dummy, and he is on it.
But how can you be gleeful when so much is at stake and its not a done deal yet??

17. I'll be overtly gleeful Wednesday,
or whenever the final tally comes in. Until then, I'm at some combination of low-grade happy and paranoid.

Thinking Obama is going to cruise could also backfire in that people think he's got it in the bag anyway, so why stand in a five hour line? Thankfully, smartly, that's the last thing Obama's people have been pushing. They stressed to take nothing for granted.

25. Only the ill informed
Only the ill informed and ignorant support McCain. If you want to find out a person's IQ, without actually having them take a test, just ask them whom they support in this election. -
