Lieberman: Time to come together
Posted: 01:29 PM ET

From CNN Associate Political Editor Rebecca Sinderbrand

Lieberman says put partisanship aside.

(CNN) — Democrat-turned-independent Joe Lieberman, one of John McCain’s biggest Senate supporters, congratulated Barack Obama Wednesday on winning the presidential election.

"I sincerely congratulate President-elect Obama for his historic and impressive victory,” he said in a statement released by his Senate office. “America remains a nation of extraordinary opportunity and the American people are a people of extraordinary fairness.

“Now that the election is over, it is time to put partisan considerations aside and come together as a nation to solve the difficult challenges we face and make our blessed land stronger and safer. I pledge to work with President-elect Obama and his incoming Administration in their efforts to reinvigorate our economy and keep our nation secure and free."

The statement comes hours after a senior Democratic leadership aide told CNN that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is planning to meet with the Connecticut senator to discuss the future of his committee chairmanship. The aide said that Reid had not yet made a final decision on the question of whether Lieberman will continue to chair the Senate’ Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

Not in this lifetime, Joe. Had we hit 60, you might have had a chance. Some may have argued to keep you to preserve the unquestioned advantage. But getting consensus from a base of 55 or so is made no harder if the numbers tip one head less to the left.

15. Lieberman Vows to Work With President-Elect Obama
Source: Associated Press

Filed at 1:33 p.m. ET

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Sen. Joe Lieberman, one of Republican John McCain's strongest supporters, is pledging to put partisan considerations aside and work with President-elect Barack Obama.

Lieberman is a Democrat-turned-independent. Although he caucused with Senate Democrats, the Connecticut lawmaker alienated many in his party for his criticism of Obama.

Lieberman issued a statement Wednesday congratulating Obama for his ''historic and impressive victory.''

Many Democrats want to strip him of his Homeland Security Committee chairmanship, kick him out of the party caucus or both because he endorsed his close friend McCain over Obama. Much depends on how badly Democrats need Lieberman to reach the 60-vote threshold required to block Republican filibusters.

Time's up, Joe.

It's no longer acceptable to kiss his rump just to get his vote. He has got to go.

Edited on Wed Nov-05-08 05:09 PM by pat_k
And only the House as a body can expel a fellow member. Expulsion by fellow members is the only means by which a member can be "fired" mid-term. (It has yet to be tested, but the general consensus seems to be that any recall process instituted by a state http://lugar.senate.gov/services/pdf_crs/Recall_of_Legislators_and_the_Removal_of_Members_of_Congress_from_Office.pdf">would be unconstitutional.)

Like impeachment, expulsion is an ultimate "trump card" -- a power to "police" our elected officials -- that we gave to Congress and Congress alone. Aside from the Constitutional requirement for a 2/3s vote, we gave each body broad authority as to the grounds, nature, timing, and procedures.

And, http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=4387354&mesg_id=4387354">speaking of impeachment. . .

It might be that despite all of our kvetching about Lieberman, he votes with us 80% of the time (and as often on important Democratic issues) even if he does run his mouth off and have all the loyalty of a snake.

Shays was only a moderate when it didn't matter. He always fell into the GOP party line eventually on the big stuff.

Anybody who can't see that Shays would worse than Lieberman needs an eye exam.

30. President-elect Obama Vows to Ignore Lieberman
President-elect Obama, who recently defeated Republican John McCain in the 2008 general election, is pledging to put bipartisan considerations aside and ignore Senator Joe Lieberman.

President-elect Obama is a lifelong Democrat. Although he caucused with Senate Democrats, the Illinois lawmaker unified the party after his defeat of Senator Clinton in the presidental primaries.

Obama issued a statement Wednesday congratulating Lieberman for being a "historic and impressive Republican tool".

Many Democrats watn to strip him of his Homeland Security Committee chairmanship, kick him out of the party caucus, and banish him to the far reaches of Southern Argentina because he endorsed his BFF McCain over Obama. Much depends on how stupid Democrats are and how badly they do at keeping orders in their own ranks.

I was an employee of the State of Connecticut and Joe was a very good senator at that time, when he was a democrat. Now that he turned to senant, he wants to get in with the president elect. I hope some good comes of this, but I know that the democratic party is mad at him and that's why he ran idependent to cover up that he is really republicsn, so he could keep his seat. Just becuase he is sm idependant, in actuallity, he is republicant through and through. I do not want him as a senator of Connecticut. I cannot wait for the next election to vote him out of office!!!!!!!!!!

Doe he want us to come together and begin working on the Buxh Doctrine? Maybe he wants us to come together to get a Republican elected in 2012.

Now he's ready to "work with" the president elect to fufill his agenda in the Middle East. There's a surprise.

58. Oh, Joe - you shockingly opportunistic, two-faced weasel you
You know, Senator, way back in 2000 I used to think that you were just an uptight, sanctimonious but well-meaning weenie. Now I think you are one of the worst sort of political back-stabbers. You have become a caricature. You have become an East-Coast, New England version of Sarah Palin: political views driven by a hopelessly distorted world view; a sense of entitlement the size of a Wal-Mart parking lot (how DARE those primary voters not pick ME!); an ambition so immense that you will throw even people who had previously supported you (including Al Gore, Barack Obama, the Democratic party in general, and Connecticut voters) under the bus if you think it will advance your political career. I pray that Harry Reid will have the backbone to strip you of your chairmanship and that your home state will have the sense to get rid of you at the earliest possible moment.

63. Reid: Time to come to the woodshed for your whupping
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/11/05/reid-lieberman-to-meet-this-week

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will likely meet later this week with Joe Lieberman to discuss whether the Democrat-turned-Independent will be stripped of his Senate committee chairmanship, a senior Democratic leadership aide tells CNN.

Lieberman currently chairs the Senate's Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

This aide says that Reid, who is calling the meeting, has not yet decided what to do. The aide admits that the decision will be determined in part by the final election results tonight — and just how close the party is to a filibuster-proof 60-seat majority — but insists that the biggest factor involved is lingering anger among Senate Democrats over Lieberman's Republican convention speech.

This aide also said that Senate Democrats aren't that upset about Lieberman's constant presence and cheerleading on the campaign trail with John McCain — instead, they've been put off by the things he said about Barack Obama at the Republican convention in St. Paul.

74. Never forget!
I was watching Lieberman standing behind McCain yesterday morning at a campaign rally, literally nodding his head and smiling at every word, as McCain called Obama a Socialist whose plans to redistribute the wealth are dangerous, etc etc.

I've always heard Joe is a foreign policy hawk but otherwise a Dem. If so, his lack of principle in supporting McCain's lies is unforgivable. If not, he has no business on the side of the Senate majority. Either way, never forget what Joe did, and strip him of his committee chairs immediately.

Unfortunately, Reid is weak, and I wouldn't be surprised if he lets Joe slide. Maybe we should contact Reid's office about this!

75. I agree with Joe, ...
A really good start will be for Obama to be a better man than Lieberman by reaching out to work with him even though he ENTHUSIASTICALLY spread GOP lies about Obama while campaigning for McCain.

I don't fault Lieberman for his loyalty. I fault him for his pro-active, agressive and ENTHUSIASTIC attacks on the democratic candidate.

Colin Powell shows how polite and decent men do it. You state who you are supporting and why. And then get off the stage. You don't smile and clap when opposition mobs are calling the democratic candidate a "socialist."
