Bush declares Tulelake relocation center part of national monument
Source: Redding Penlight

A presidential proclamation designating the Tulelake Relocation and Segregation Center near Newell in Siskiyou County as part of a World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument was signed Friday by President George W. Bush.

The national monument will include eight other sites - five in the Pearl Harbor area of Hawaii and three in Alaska.

In his proclamation, Bush said that the Tulelake Segregation Center National Historic Landmark and the nearby Camp Tulelake, a former civilian conservation camp, were used to house Japanese-Americans relocated from throughout the West Coast.

The U.S. Department of the Interior will manage the national monument through the National Park Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Not sure how this relates to Valor in the Pacific, but it's a good thing this land is protected. I would have suggested it be tacked on to the nearby Lava Beds National Monument.

2. for some reason I find that kinda weird
Why would we want to preserve something so negative?

The article says nothing much is left there -- interestingly, two of the old barracks were moved to Edgewood, near Weed in Siskiyou County, to create a Farm Bureau building. The Farm Bureau sold that property to my parents 35 years ago. I wonder if we can get federal funding to repair them? haha

3. Having been to the Manzanar relocation center
(which has a BUNCH of stuff and a terrific visitor center) it's important to preserve our history, warts and all.

If we can point fingers at the holocaust and say "Never Again," why can't we point fingers at the Japanese relocation and say the same thing?

6. Michelle Malkin, and the Neocons, agree with you -- for the wrong reasons
Malkin has suggested Bush do exactly this with internment camps -- to NORMALIZE their use.

Read Malkin's "In Defense of Internment".

5. Bush is the anti-FDR
All, each and every one of the Bush Administration's policies was designed to reverse the New Deal and FDR.

From the failed attempt to exterminate Social Security via privatization...

...to the gloriously successful reversal of the Nuremburg Trials (pre-emptive war), Geneva Conventions (torture), and as many market safeguards as possible (economic meltdown), as well as dozens of other examples.
