SHOCKER: Sebelius removes name from Cabinet consideration
Source: Kansas City Star

Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, who was a finalist for vice president last summer and under consideration for several Cabinet posts in a Barack Obama administration, today withdrew her name from the selection process.

The surprise move ends intense political speculation that Sebelius was on her way to Washington and that Lt. Gov. Mark Parkinson was about to become the state's new chief executive.

In a brief statement e-mailed to reporters at 4 p.m. today, Sebelius cited the state's worsening budget situation in the wake of the nation's economic crisis as her reason for staying.

“Given the extraordinary budget challenges facing our state, and my commitment to continuing the progress we’ve made in Kansas, I believe it is important to continue my service as governor of the great state of Kansas; a job that I love and have been honored to hold. The possibility of joining President-elect Obama’s team is exciting and compelling, but my service to the citizens who elected me is my top priority in these difficult times."

Stating the current economic climate as the reason. Kansas' economy seems to be doing even worse than many other parts of the country.

8. Exactly.
And, frankly, governors usually do better in presidential runs than senators. That is what you're thinking, isn't it? Pull Kansas out of the hole, we'll give her the rest of the country.

40. Give me a break.. I live in Kansas
we are no worse than anywhere else. Likely better off as we have been reletively unhurt by the decline in property values. Sure we have had some downs but nothing like other areas. We have also not been hurt too bad by the credit and financial markets. The pending commodity collapse could hurt things, but we are no worse off than anywhere else.

30. It's intentional, I'm not going to change.
However, in the spirit of being friendly, I will say I think she made a sensible choice which anyone might make in similar circumstances. But she could have decided the other way, and it still would not be "shocking". That's why people get to decide things, because a decision needs to be made, and it could go either way.

23. three questions:
a) is she the real deal, taking her responsibility as an elected head of state seriously?
b) would she fail her FBI background check for some unknown reason?
c) Did she have an eye on a particular office already given to someone else?

35. Probably wants to stay and run for US Senate in '10
Not likely to win. Red state, midterm with Dem President. No Dem senator in KS since the 30's. But she COULD win, best hope for a Democratic Senator in Kansas since Bob Dole nearly lost in '74.

37. This clown claims that Sebelius sent out an email stating
that she was staying in Kansas, but his spin is that she did so bc P.E. Obama had passed her over. http://voices.kansascity.com/node/3006#comment-13118 However, he cites no evidence for that.
