Hagel (R-Ne) 'inclined' to back bailout bill

Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel said today that he’s inclined to support a $14 billion bailout for U.S. automakers, even though the Senate’s top Republican says he’s against it.

The bailout, a compromise between President George W. Bush and Democrats, passed Wednesday evening in the House.

It faces strong opposition from Senate Republicans, including Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who said the measure “isn’t nearly tough enough.’’

Hagel said he still has some questions about the bill. But he said letting the three major American automakers go out of business would be “astoundingly disastrous.’’

I have been at odds with the out going Senator often. Other than the war, he has almost always voted with his party and President. I want to thank him on this issue and hope he gets word of this.
