Johnston's arrest was oxycontin-related
Source: Anchorage Daily News

WASILLA -- Wasilla resident Sherry L. Johnston, mother of Bristol Palin's boyfriend, faces a Jan. 6 court date for an oxycontin-related arrest at her home by Alaska State Troopers.

Little additional information was available Friday on the case as authorities remained unusually tight-lipped about details. But Palmer court records listed her scheduled court date and a troopers spokeswoman said in a release late Friday afternoon that the charges "are in relation to the drug oxycontin."

Johnston is the mother of Levi Johnston, the Wasilla 18-year-old suddenly placed in an international spotlight in September when Gov. Sarah Palin -- who was then running for vice president on the Republican ticket with John McCain -- and her husband, Todd, announced their teenage daughter was pregnant and he was the father.

Johnston's first court appearance will be an arraignment hearing -- when defendants are informed of their charges and usually enter a plea -- scheduled for Jan. 6, according to the Palmer court calendar.

She was arrested around noon Thursday by troopers serving a search warrant in an undercover drug investigation. A standard press released issued by troopers said Johnston was arrested on six felony counts: second-degree misconduct involving a controlled substance -- generally manufacturing or delivering drugs -- as well as fourth-degree misconduct involving controlled substances, or possession.

3. wasn't the story about Palin's eldest son...
Edited on Sat Dec-20-08 07:35 AM by progdonkey
that he was sent into the Army to straighten him out because he'd been getting drunk and mainlining oxycontin? I guess them white trash love to mix themselves some oxy and meth--delicious.

I honestly wonder what the next big news will be from Palin--just when you think she can't be any more white trash, she or a (soon-to-be) relative manages to top it.

My guess for the next shocker? Bristol's baby comes out with dark skin, and Levi Johnston is clearly not the baby-daddy. The Palins can have a whole family episode on Maury to find out just which of the five black men in Wasilla is her baby daddy. :P

29. Betting she will somehow be allowed to plea bargain so there will be NO trial
If Palin has any say in the matter. Can't have all the dirt dragged out into the public.
If it is a federal charge, though, is it all out of Palin's hands?

You know she won't want witnesses on the stand..what if they put Levi up there "what did you know, when did you know it". Ditto if Bristol has been in the house.

And did that search warrant include the entire house...like **his** room also?? Could ANYone who has stepped foot into the house be called as a witness?
And the little blurb in the ADN about the officials commenting that "recording conversations" is part of the investigation protocol. Hmmmm...tapped phones at the Johnston's house or their cell phones..or any phone calls placed to Johnston about alleged drug requests.

If the investigation involved arresting any Wasilla drug users/buyers who turned in Johnston as their alleged dealer, there may be alot of nervous Wasilla families out there. Wondering how many of them may have gotten THEIR charges reduced or dropped to give info on Johnston.

34. Maybe I'm different here
but I feel for this woman. Her private hell will now become fodder for TMZ, and her chances of recovery will diminish from the intrusiveness of the exposure. She didn't have anything to do with McLame picking her son's girlfriend to make an ass of herself in front of the nation. Now, this woman will have to deal with being the substitute whipping boy for Caribou Barbie's goofyness.

After seeing the responses on this and the other Sherry Johnston threads, I am surprised that we're acting just like freeptards who found out on the news that one of Michelle Obama's cousins had a drug problem. All the "hillbilly heroin" and other remarks about rural Western people are no better than the inner-city-blacks-and-drugs remarks the wingnuts would be making.

I used to live out in the timber country of Washington State's Olympic Peninsula, and the drug problems of the people in communities that have a low economic base (even before the current recession) are no laughing matter. That goes for the addicted, their families, and the victims of what the addicts do to get their fixes.

35. I think it goes to show that
people are people, wherever you go and whatever label you choose to wear.

I'm pretty appalled by all the ugly comments in this thread. I expected them, but it doesn't make it any easier to read.

Also, you may have sympathy for Ms Johnston as an addict, but I don't think that's what they collared her for. It appears that she was nabbed for trafficking in the stuff. That's another step yet from getting hooked on it.

If you know anything about Ms Johnston, you might know that she, (like other people) has had some "issues" for some time. Some people might see the arrest as getting her just deserves, but at the same time, maybe it will be the start of getting some help.

40. Is there some reason that the law should not apply?
Trafficking Ozycontin can get you 20 years on a first offense - unless there is a related death. Being convicted of a felony does result in a loss of privacy.

43. i thought that the formulation of oxycontin had been changed to prevent abuse...?
i was taking the stuff about ten years ago, and it didn't take long to figure out that chewing them was the way to go...then my insurance got dropped, and oxy was way too expensive, so the doctor switched me to methadone. it's not as much fun, but it gets the job done, and it's a whole lot more affordable.

45. Any opiate can be abused ...
I am a fellow (I assume) chronic pain patient. For people like you and I, these medications are taken in an overwhelmingly responsible fashion, statistically speaking. The pain kind of cancels out the euphoria, and you just get relief.

Unfortunately, some folks take more than prescribed for obvious reasons. That's also why so many people who should be on long-term opiate management never get it. Abusers get caught, the DEA starts looking around, doctors get nervous, and prescribing adequate pain meds seems less attractive.

http://www.courtrecords.alaska.gov/pa/pa.urd/pamw2000.docket_lst?62040255

Not much there yet except the charges and bond paid. I imagine the closer we get to the January court date, the more we will see.

Right now it is listed as: State of Alaska vs. Johnston, Sherry Lee
