Proposal would let unwed partners adopt (in Utah)
Source: Salt Lake Trib

Utah law forbids anyone in a cohabiting relationship -- gay or straight -- from adopting a child or serving as a foster parent. Single adults of any sexual orientation can adopt, but preference goes to married couples.

But in 2009, Rep. Rebecca Chavez-Houck, D-Salt Lake City, hopes to reverse the 2000 law that forbids all unmarried couples from serving as adoptive or foster parents. (Same-sex marriages, like the Thompsons', are not recognized by Utah, which has a constitutional ban on such unions.)

And while it will likely die in committee in Utah, the fact that they are even bringing up the issue is more evidence that we are in the beginning of the end of homosexual discrimination. Gay marriage is a certainty. Of course it will take time and of course we need to keep fighting tooth and nail. But this just can not be stopped.

4. Somehow I doubt that. Meet them in a bathroom stall always seemed
more likely with that one.

5. Yeah, but those who would
meet them in a bathroom stall seems to be the ones who would go on anti-gay crusades to prove their supposed heterosexuality.

3. I know of over a dozen singles who have adopted in Utah
I'm not sure if they have partners or not--most I think are just single.
This measure will certainly take pressure off the foster care system.

6. She's my rep! And neighbor.
a wonderful person, good for her. It won't pass but bless her for making us talk about it again.

I know several mormons who voted for the constitutional amendment in 2004 banning gay marriage who have since told me they were wrong and if they could vote again, they would vote against it.

I watched the Utah legislature debate the ERA many years ago and one legislator said (I'm not making this up) that he would never vote for an amendment that would make it against the law for him to take his hat off when a woman got on the elevator. What an idiot. Another said if the amendment passed all public restroom facilities would have to be integrated men and women in the same bathroom. There are some dumb, provincial ppl here. Rebecca is not one of them.
