Schumer: Franken is the winner

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), the just-departed chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, declared Sunday that Al Franken has won the Minnesota Senate recount against Sen. Norm Coleman (R-Minn.).

“With the Minnesota recount complete, it is now clear that Al Franken won the election. The Canvassing Board will meet tomorrow to wrap up its work and certify him the winner, and while there are still possible legal issues that will run their course, there is no longer any doubt who will be the next Senator from Minnesota,” Schumer said in a statement.

Franken leads Coleman by 225 votes, with all ballots recounted. Minnesota’s Canvassing Board is scheduled to declare Franken the winner on Monday. The Coleman campaign, however, has filed a lawsuit with the state Supreme Court requesting that over 600 absentee ballots be added to the count that it believes were unfairly rejected.

.....................

But Schumer suggested he has little patience for a protracted legal challenge.

“With the Senate set to begin meeting on Tuesday to address the important issues facing the nation, it is crucial that Minnesota’s seat not remain empty, and I hope this process will resolve itself as soon as possible,” Schumer said.

7. Doesn't AM Radio Need Another GOP Cheerleader?
Coleman could fill many jobs.

I have to wonder if at least 225 voters went for Al because of his stint on Air America? It is interesting the influence that station (that came late and left soon thereafter in my area) has had on our political culture.

A top cable news host...a US Senator...In such a short time....extremely impressive!

It doesn't surprise me, nothing really does about these people anymore. Just ignorant of the investigation. Off to check it out. Thanks for mentioning it.

*Edited to add Congrats to Minnesotans on your newest Senator, Al Franken. I am so glad he won.

27. not fully honest
Keep in mind, right or wrong by whatever rules, there are at least 600 ballots not being counted. More ballots weren't counted in this race than the margin of victory ... I think that's very sad. There was (still is?) a recount page from the star tribune that had scans of the ballots to be recounted, and it was appalling... people really are that fucking stupid that they can't read two lines of instructions and go through a ballot and properly fill it out. What's more sad than that, is that these are people educated and living in the US, and they've never thought the need to learn these incredibly basic skills, and no one has ever thought it important enough to teach them.... an election where an uneducated and uninformed populace is doing the voting can never really be a fair election.

17. WSJ has already written its Sour grapes article:
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123111967642552909.html

Strange things keep happening in Minnesota, where the disputed recount in the Senate race between Norm Coleman and Al Franken may be nearing a dubious outcome. Thanks to the machinations of Democratic Secretary of State Mark Ritchie and a meek state Canvassing Board, Mr. Franken may emerge as an illegitimate victor.

Mr. Franken started the recount 215 votes behind Senator Coleman, but he now claims a 225-vote lead and suddenly the man who was insisting on "counting every vote" wants to shut the process down. He's getting help from Mr. Ritchie and his four fellow Canvassing Board members, who have delivered inconsistent rulings and are ignoring glaring problems with the tallies.
================================================================

They cannot even begin to allow for a fair election.

Here comes the RW talking heads crying foul.

F-em... HOORAY for Senator Al Franken!!!!

23. We all know they don't play by the same rules....
They talk the talk...but they NEVER walk the walk. A bunch of lying sons-of-bitches...and coleman is one of the biggest.

I don't know what it is about MN, and I'm from there, but they seem to pump out some of the best and the worst of politicians. This guy, and that stupid bitch in the House are two of the most two-faced, hypocrites in Congress today. It's shameful.

You just know these cowards neocon/fascists are going to fight this every step of the way. Pigs...party of porky.
