Jeb Bush says he won't run for Senate in 2010
Source: Tallahassee Democrat

Former Gov. Jeb Bush announced today he won't run for the U.S. Senate in 2010.

"While the opportunity to serve my state and country during these turbulent and
dynamic times is compelling, now is not the right time to return to elected office," Bush said in a prepared statement issued from his Miami office.

"In the coming months and years, I hope to play a constructive role in the future of the Republican Party, advocating ideas and policies that solve the pressing problems of our day," Bush said. "We must rebuild the Party by focusing on the common purposes and core conservative principles that unite us all – limited government, a strong national defense and safe homeland and the protection of liberty tempered by personal responsibility."

.....

"For me, there is no greater calling than education reform. Securing our nation’s economic future starts with providing a world-class education to every single American student – building a system that lessens our populace’s dependence on government," Bush's statement said.

"Through the Foundation for Florida’s Future and Foundation for Excellence in Education, I remain committed to advancing policies key to a reform agenda, including higher academic standards, greater accountability for learning and more educational choices for all families.

1. My guess is Jeb doesn't want to carry around the Bush baggage
And in doing so, he will fade from public life

This is a good thing

20. Jeb was the first choice, but he lost the '94 FL Governor race.
Both Jeb and George ran for governor in 1994.

George beat Ann Richards, Jeb lost to Lawton Chiles.

Barbara Bush was more upset over Jeb's loss than she was happy about George's win.

Supposedly, Jeb was the one who was supposed to run in 2000, but losing the '94 race put a stop to that plan.

George was Plan B.

22. Interesting
So if you had the choice, would you go back into time and vote Republican in Florida in 94?

Seriously - I remember Jeb ran as a Moderate, if not outright left-of-center Republican and George ran as a Klansman. When asked what he planned to do for minorities, he replied "Absolutely nothing."

26. Actually it was Jeb who said he'd do "probably nothing" for black people.
"Bush's history of politically unfortunate rhetoric goes back to 1994, when he famously answered a question on the campaign trail by saying he would do "probably nothing" for blacks if elected governor. He lost the race against incumbent Gov. Lawton Chiles by a hair -- and many analysts believe his dismal showing among black voters (he got just 4 percent) was largely to blame."

"Seriously - I remember Jeb ran as a Moderate, if not outright left-of-center Republican and George ran as a Klansman."

I think you have it backwards. Then again, this is the Bush family - they will lie about their positions on anything.

27. Hmmm - got it wrong then
It was 94, I was 24 and in Thailand (Peace Corps) seeing the US from a strange Convex mirror.

And I remember my dad sending me the National Review - which I hated, but read because it was one of few reading materials around my place.

35. Sadly, you're wrong
Jeb is still loved in No. (redneck, Repug) FL. and would win by a country mile here, barely lose down south and would indeed be our next senator. FL isn't smart enough to see thru his guile and double talk.

I live in Florida - my wife is a long-time teacher. We live his "education reforms".

His only goal was to kill public education in the state - and he has pretty well succeeded.

10. That's exactly what he means when he refers to a system that is less dependent
on the government. To the Bushes, government's role is to further enrich the wealthy & the corporations...with our tax dollars.

Do you remember a few years ago when Jeb Bush drastically cut funds for the elderly & the disabled in order to use those cost savings to lure some huge corporation to Florida? Talk about heartless, but that was just another example of Bush priorities. I was looking for an article about it recently but couldn't find anything.

8. Translation: 'I need more money in my *Educational Foundation* coffers.'
Statement issued by Jeb Bush:

"After thoughtful consideration, I have decided not to run for the United States Senate in 2010.

"While the opportunity to serve my state and country during these turbulent and dynamic times is compelling, now is not the right time to return to elected office.

"In the coming months and years, I hope to play a constructive role in the future of the Republican Party, advocating ideas and policies that solve the pressing problems of our day. We must rebuild the Party by focusing on the common purposes and core conservative principles that unite us all - limited government, a strong national defense and safe homeland and the protection of liberty tempered by personal responsibility.

"While fundamentally different ideologies divide Republicans and Democrats, we can not allow politics to come before the needs of our people and communities. We must raise the level of debate to reflect the American people's desire for change and bi-partisanship, embodied by November's historic election. President-elect Obama ran a tremendous campaign and I am proud to call him my President. I am confident Republicans will find productive ways to work together with the new administration to advance reforms both sides of the aisle can support.

"For me, there is no greater calling than education reform. Securing our nation's economic future starts with providing a world-class education to every single American student - building a system that lessens our populace's dependence on government. Through the Foundation for Florida's Future and Foundation for Excellence in Education, I remain committed to advancing policies key to a reform agenda, including higher academic standards, greater accountability for learning and more educational choices for all families.

"Finally, I thank Senator Martinez for his extraordinary service to our great state and thank the many Floridians and Americans across the country that offered me support and encouragement as I came to this decision."

Hey, Jeb, you were Governor from 1999 until January, 2007. Looks like you were an abysmal failure.

He cares nothing for the education of the children of our state or any other. Just as the Crawford pig ranch was a cardboard prop, so is Jeb's *concern* for education.

.... I'm sure this is because he wants to run for President in 2012.

Karl Rove is probably working on the scheme to steal 2012 already.

We have to nail Jeb's coffin lid shut - quickly.
