Clinton Greeted by Cheers at State Department (Update1)

Jan. 22 (Bloomberg) -- Hillary Clinton, the day after being sworn in as secretary of State, was greeted by cheers and applause from hundreds of diplomats and support staff packed into her department’s entry foyer, many with cameras.

“This is a new era for America,” Clinton said, adding that she welcomes candid advice and debate within the department on policy. “Robust diplomacy and effective development are the best long-term tools for securing America’s future.”

President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden are scheduled to visit the department this afternoon for a meeting with Clinton on ways to bolster U.S. diplomacy. They’ll be joined by National Security Adviser James Jones and his deputy, Tom Donilon.

Clinton and Obama vow to accelerate diplomatic overtures to allies and adversaries in a new drive to solve foreign-policy puzzles that include two wars, nuclear challenges from Iran to North Korea and the elusive quest for peace in the Middle East.

2. And Diaper David Vitter
voted against her confirmation, not because he had any valid objections to her being our SECSTATE, not because of his concern for Bill Clinton's alleged conflicts of interest, not because vitter cares about America, but because vitter needs to tell the religious zealots in Louisiana that he voted against Clinton because they hate her so much and he's up for reelection in 2010. I hope his campaign will be the three ring circus it deserves to be.

8. Every single government department. Every one.
They did their damnedest to make sure this nation was non-functional. I get exhausted even imagining the amount of work that has to be done.

Can you imagine what it's going to be like for all these department heads? The really great thing for Hillary is they're so happy to see her that they will be the first to show her where all the nasties are that need fixing. I bet they even have lists ready to go.

13. is this what liberation day felt like?
I can't even imagine how this change must feel like to people at the EPA.

The Bush administration did everything they could to destroy it short of setting fires; oh wait...

Congrats out to all the good people who toughed it out during the last 8 years, and kept at it, bless you guys.

and must say she did an excellent job at acknowledging what State has been up against the past 8 years and how the new administration plans on setting things right. The employees seemed positively giddy over her presence and the new direction as stated.

17. The Clintons are well known for their get even, payback mentality.
People want to keep their jobs. So I sure wouldn't expect them to act anything less than enthusiastic.

For instance Clinton lying about being under sniper fire. Oh well, I guess you consider integrity and honesty overrated.

25. Oh yes. It takes real tinfoil to make the observation that people
at the State Department who want to keep their jobs would be stupid to act anything less than enthusiastic.

That is just so out of the realm of possibility. :sarcasm:
