a little blurb on it in the politics section, but ya gotta look hard for it. This is being VERY underplayed in Pravda, not a single word about it in my paper today.

Congratulations to Mr Chandler!

Is this seat up for election again this November, or does this special election hold over til 2006?

Also, does the special election in SD-AL some weeks (months?) from now hold over until 2006, or will it be re-contested in November?

ON EDIT: The date of the SD-AL special election is 1st June.

7. Chandler Wins
This is big. The republican candidate Alice Forgy Kerr campaigned on her strong support of the squatter and his policies. Maybe this is the beginning of the end. This seat was formerly held by a republican Ernie Fletcher who was elected KY governor.

17. There's a history of special elections being harbingers ....
Edited on Tue Feb-17-04 07:13 PM by 11cents
In 1991, the Senate election in Pennsylvania to replace Heinz, won by Harris Wofford with a campaign that stressed health care. In 1994, several special elections won by the GOP foreshadowed the November GOP sweep.

Democrat Ben Chandler wins special election

By CHARLES WOLFE
Associated Press Writer

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- Democrat Ben Chandler won a special election Tuesday for a vacant U.S. House seat formerly held by Gov. Ernie Fletcher, a Republican. Chandler's victory ended a losing streak for the Democratic Party.

Chandler, who had great name recognition after two terms as attorney general, but had lost decisively to Fletcher in the gubernatorial election in November, defeated Republican state Sen. Alice Forgy Kerr of Lexington. A Libertarian candidate, Mark Gailey of Berea, also was on the ballot.

With 88 percent of precincts reporting, Chandler had 74,935 votes, or 56 percent. Kerr had 57,071 or 42 percent. Gailey had 2,620 votes or 2 percent.

George W. Bush is a uniter, his imbecilic "presidency" has united me with the overwhelming majority of the human race against him. 47. What I find just
as interesting is the complete lack of coverage of this story. Not one inkblot about this in my local rag and very little on the "mainstream" media sites online. I wonder if the media play would be a little different if Chandler had lost this race, just wondering.
