DR Congo rebel leader 'arrested'
Source: BBC

Gen Laurent Nkunda, the leader of the main rebel group in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, has been arrested, the military says.

He was arrested as he fled into Rwanda while trying to resist a joint Rwandan-Congolese military operation, the operation's joint command said.

Some 3,500 Rwandan troops entered DR Congo on Tuesday to help government forces disarm Rwandan Hutu FDLR rebels.

Gen Nkunda has been leading the rival CNDP Tutsi insurgency.

He has always said he was protecting his community against the FDLR.

A complicated situation; but the idea of moves against both Hutu and Tutsi guerillas sounds good for stability, to me. The less armed factions there are, the better. There may be more to it, though.

1. Nkunda going away doesn't fill me with sorrow

I keep remembering this picture of him from a National Geographic article in the region a few months ago; sitting out in a field wearing a custom-tailored suit, silk shirt with cuff links, a baton with what looked like a gold eagle's head on it, etc., - flanked by a bunch of soldiers with AKs and grenade launchers.

Really had the look of someone who had the locals' best interests in mind. :sarcasm: (That's before factoring in stuff like the child soldiers and so on.)

I'm still waiting for Joseph Kony to be taken in, out or apart, though..
