Bush Installs Judge (Pryor), Bypassing Senate
http://start.earthlink.net/newsarticle?cat=6&aid=220012625_5302_lead_story

February 20, 2004 03:35 PM EST

WASHINGTON - Bypassing Senate Democrats who have stalled his judicial nominations, President Bush installed Alabama Attorney General William Pryor on the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday.

Bush praised Pryor as "this leading American lawyer" and complained that the Senate had unfairly blocked him and other White House nominees.

<snip>

Didn't he already do this? Am I thinking of another judge?

Please lock if dupe. Thanks.

2. last month, Charles Pickering
Last month, Bush used a similar appointment to promote Mississippi federal judge Charles Pickering to the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

when he said things would be lot easier ... dictator ... he meant what he said, said as told to him by his handlers

4. Yes--he did...
He is, in effect, "pocket vetoing" the Senate's lack of confirmation--or, in certain cases, their actual voting down confirmation-- of his right-wing appointees to the Federal Bench.

This is (currently) legal for him to do, but it fully CIRCUMVENTS the Senate's Constitutional right of consent, and to comfirm or reject judicial appointments. The good thing about it is that these appointments will only be good for the remainder of the year. The BAD thing about it is, well, they'll be good for the remainder of the year!

B-)

5. You're thinking of Charles Pickering ...
* appointed Pickering to the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans last month. The 5th Circuit Court is the same court that only just yesterday or today agreed to hear a request from "Jane Roe" to have Roe v. Wade overturned.

So now Pryor, and that makes two of the filibustered judges that * has appointed via recess appointment.

Wonder how he's going to override the Senate to make sure they stay there? (Because you KNOW there's no way these are temporary appointments ... I don't care what the laws say. And neither does *, for that matter!)

"take a message for the prez" line at the WH is, but I gave him an earful when I heard this. I asked him why we even have a Congress when the emperor just goes around it if he doesn't get his way. He thanked me for calling, I told him to start packing, because he's gonna have to find a new job come next January. I usually try not to ream out the people that answer "complaint" lines, because they just work there, they aren't the boss, but you know what? The phone answering people that work at the WH are (I am sure) repubs, so they don't get an apology from me, just a complaint. I had to hang on for quite a while when I called, I hope I wasn't the only one bitching about this. Why does W even go through the motions of putting this people up for the nomination process? If they don't get passed right through he just pulls this stunt. Is it just so that people perceive that he is trying to do things the correct way?

25. David Schorr on this subject this morning (great comment):
Scott Simon asked him what he thought of SF Mayor Gavin Newsome & the thousands of actual gay marriage licenses (:bounce:) that've been issued this week.

Schorr's response (best as I can remember): "The president made another recess appointment this week. Every time something happens that the administration can't handle, they go in another direction and do something to satisfy their base."

Mr. Schorr, you rock!
