Sacramento cops give up raises to save 70 jobs
Source: Sacramento Bee

Nearly 70 police jobs in the city of Sacramento likely have been saved after the police union and city officials reached a tentative agreement early this morning on a series of salary concessions aimed at solving a historic budget gap, The Bee has learned.

Police salary concessions -- forgoing a 5 percent cost-of-living increase and other raises associated with tenure -- will carve more than $6 million from the city's $50 million deficit for the 2009-10 fiscal year, city officials say.

The police union is the only city labor group to agree to negotiate with the city. If all the unions agree to concessions, $24 million will be saved from next year's deficit, city officials said.

11. And the jobs they save may be their own
If people aren't willing to give a little, eventually they will be at risk.

5. Happening at my moms school district too.
All the administrators and tenured teachers voted on a 1% pay cut which will save at least 75 jobs. There is some crazy shit happening in this economy.

6. We did this in '90-91, and look fair...
...to do it again. I don't know if school staff are more likely to do this.

20. We're all taking a pay freeze and 5 day furlough.
Hoping to save everyone's job. Most people seem OK to do it.

8. Each of the employees at my company has given up 13.5% of their salary
for the same exact reason. No increase was even considered this year on any level. Our 401k company match has also been eliminated for this year. Gotta do it to keep eveyone's jobs.

10. It is a win win for everyone
People don't lose their jobs and we won't lose those extra cops on street. When the economy gets bad, crime goes up and we can't afford to lose any police protection right now.

12. In my end of the public sector, we haven't seen 5% raises since the 90's, if then.
That would be a luxury -- most of the time, 1-2%, so in effect, a pay cut given the cost of living. Raises for the next two years, at least? Zero. And there is not likely to much beyond that. But, happy to have a job.

15. I wonder . . will this lead to more corruption among police to supplement their incomes ?
.
.
.

It certainly would not be anything new.

So this DOES concern me somewhat . .

Decades ago I was a constant traveler(by car) through over 25 states

being "wise" I didn't carry much cash, mostly traveler's checks

and some cops - didn't have "change" for the imposed fine (speeding - only 3 times but I remember well)

of course, if I wanted to "fight" the ticket, I could always hang around till the court date to fight it, or pay in person

yeah right

AND

A cop busts a dealer with cash -

Who's to say how much the dealer had?

and so on . . .

Scrimping on paying the police good wages and benefits is not wise IMO

"Don't get cheap in the wrong places" is one of my guidelines

It will cost you BIG TIME in the long run . .

big time . . .

18. They did decades ago - on the interstate? - Canadian plates?
.
.
.

you bet they did

maybe that has changed,

I haven't driven in the States for over 15 years

and never will again in this lifetime

I'm staying on MY side of the border until I pass into the beyond

16. This is jsut stupid
No offense but Califronia needs to generate enough revenue to pay for our basic services, like police.

How? Um, could TAXING THE WEALTHY be an option?

Nope, not in California. Now we'll get a bunch of cops making less money when the cost of food, and almost everything else, has increased over their cost of living increases form past years.

Wonder if a broke cop is a nice cop? A less corrupt cop?

California has failed. And now we're going to get the DMV tax they recalled Davis for.
