AT&T to add 3,000 jobs
Source: CNNMoney.com

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- AT&T plans to add 3,000 jobs in 2009 as part of a multibillion-dollar capital-spending plan, the telecommunications company said Tuesday. In a press release, AT&T said it would spend $17 billion to $18 billion this year, with two-thirds of the funds pledged to build up its wireless and broadband networks to provide more coverage.

As part of its expansion plan, the company will add almost 3,000 jobs in 2009 to support increased customer demand for wireless, broadband and video. AT&T said its data traffic has grown, on average, more than 50% year-over-year.

(snip)

Despite the job additions in its wireless and broadband units, AT&T expects to proceed with the nearly 12,000 job cuts it announced in December due to economic pressures, restructuring and consumers' shift from wired voice services to wireless and broadband. AT&T also said it will expand its high-speed wireless service to 20 new markets this year, in addition to creating 2,100 new cell sites across the country.

19. Heh, its even a little more complicated.
Cinglular was a 50/50 joint venture between SBC and Bellsouth.

SBC then bought AT&T, and the new AT&T bought Bellsouth, giving them full control of Cingular.

13. The Full Scenario Was
--In 1984, AT&T split off their local phone companies (NYNEX, Bell Atlantic, Bellsouth, Ameritech, Southwestern Bell, US West, Pacific Bell) and kept long distance, manufacturing, and research.

--Southwestern Bell bought Pacific Bell and Ameritech.

--Southwestern Bell partnered with Bellsouth to create Cingular wireless that was 50% owned by each company.

--Southwestern Bell (then called SBC) bought AT&T, changed its corporate name to AT&T, merged AT&T's wireless network into Cingular, and changed Cingular's name to AT&T Mobility.

--The new AT&T then purchased BellSouth to take 100% ownership of the former Cingular.

18. ATT (as SBC) always did own Cingular jointly with Bell South
Edited on Wed Mar-11-09 07:39 AM by Gman
Cingular was a joint venture of the old SBC and Bell South. Bell South merged with SBC, SBC bought ATT, SBC dropped the SBC name and started using ATT, and Cingular also assumed the name ATT Wireless along with the legacy ATT wireless network.

17. from the article
'add almost 3,000 jobs in 2009 to support increased customer demand for wireless, broadband and video.'

did they cooperate with bushco and spy on us?

certainly -- and they should be punished for that.

but that's not all they do.

8. so is that basically a net loss of 9,000 jobs with a smiley-face stuck on it?
adding 3,000 jobs while saying you are continuing to proceed with 12,000 job cuts?

15. bet those 3,000 jobs are being created to take advantage of stimulus tax breaks
And gee -- they have 17 or 18 billion to invest in their company, but not in those 9 thousand souls that they laid off. Profits before people -- that's the American Way.

10. WOW! CNN's headline is VERY misleading. 12,000 jobs lost vs. 3000 jobs created.

However, ATT is happy to report, they will proceed with "... the nearly 12,000 job cuts it announced in December..." .These losses will be confined to the US.
