Rape reports rise in US military
Source: BBC

Reports of sexual assault by US military personnel against both fellow troops and civilians rose by some 8% last year to 2,923, the Pentagon says.

The number of incidents reported in Iraq and Afghanistan rose by about a quarter on the previous year to 163.

Pentagon officials say the jump in reports suggests the department's policy of encouraging victims to come forward is bearing results.

But they estimate that no more than 20% of attacks are actually reported.

1. We are no longer getting 'the best and the brightest'. We are also getting
the unemployed (and in many cases unemployable) and the dimmest who have no where else to turn.

5. "women should stay away from the military"
that won't change anything, women will just continue to have limited options.

the rapists and the rape culture need to be eliminated, and it won't happen by removing women from the military.

6. We don't know if the amount is going up...
Reports went up, but the actual numbers could have gone up or down or stayed the same.

4. Because it's the number of reports that is up, I'm hoping that's because more women feel strongly
enough about what's happened to them that they report it.

Hey, twice a year I'm an optimist.
