Police: Six dead in Carthage nursing-home shooting
Source: WRAL

Carthage, N.C. — A gunman walked into a Moore County nursing home Sunday morning, fatally shooting six people and injuring three others, including a police officer, police said.

The shooting happened around 10 a.m. at Pinelake Health and Rehab Center, 801 Pinehurst Ave., a 90-bed rehabilitation, nursing and Alzheimer's care facility in Carthage.

The injured, as well as the alleged shooter, who was also injured, were taken to Moore Regional Hospital, Carthage Police Chief Chris McKenzie said.

He did not offer a motive for the crime or say what the suspect's relationship to the facility might be.

2. Oh Geez! What kind of sicko goes in and shoots up a nursing home?
Bad enough that he shot people working there or what not, but I sure hope I don't read later that he shot some residents. :-(

46. He evidently did.
From the article:

Krueger said the victims were Pinelake residents Tessie Garner, 88; Lillian Dunn, 89; Jessie Musser, 88; Bessie Hendrick, 78; John Goldston, 78; Margaret Johnson, 89; Louise Decker, 98; and nurse Jerry Avant Jr., 39.

They were all residents except for one nurse.

3. Stand on Zanzibar
The seemingly increasing spate of random multiple killings eerily mirrors emerging future trends described in John Brunner's 1968 novel, which coincidentally takes place in 2010.

:hi:

I highly reccommend it to those who have never read it. Some scary parelells to our current situation vis society and overpopulation. IIRC, it won the Hugo for sci-fi novel that year.

6. One of the best and most predictive books I've read...
The story is set in 2010, mostly in the United States. A number of plots and many vignettes are played out in this future world, based on Brunner's extrapolation of social, economic and technological trends. The key main trends are based on the enormous population and its impact: social stresses, eugenic legislation, widening social divisions, future shock, extremism. Certain of Brunner's guesses are fairly close, others not, and some ideas clearly show their 1960s mind-set.

Many futuristic concepts, products and services, and slang are presented. The Hipcrime Vocab and other works by the fictional sociologist Chad C. Mulligan are frequent sources of quotations. Some examples of slang include "codder" (man), "shiggy" (woman), "whereinole" (where in hell?), "prowlie" (an armored police car), "offyourass" (possessing an attitude) and "mucker" (a person running amok). A new technology introduced is "eptification" (education for particular tasks), a form of mental programming.

14. I just opened that book up yesterday
with the intent of re-reading it (for about the hundredth time). Brunner's trilogy should be required reading in this day and age.

The three books (not sure of the order):

-Stand On Zanzibar
-The Sheep Look Up
-The Shockwave Rider (which I just finished two days ago)

The man was a prophet. The Shockwave Rider contained the literal invention of the computer virus, among other internet-related predictions...

17. must be something in the water
guns will always be legal in the US, the recent supreme court decision even made sure that those guns would include handguns

its just not that simple...the prevelence of guns in this country is not only about how "easy" it is the acquire one but also a societies appetite for weapons.

at the moment i dont have time to go into the intracesies of this whole topic but i can tell you that there is no easy solution

Edited on Sun Mar-29-09 09:30 PM by Pavulon
that would cover 99.9 percent of gun murder. Income less than 85k or not retired with positive net worth, cant have a gun. That is why NFA guns are never used and Greenwich has no murder.

Now that would be political suicide. But looking at that number should isolate the problem and maybe help those of us who are actually interested in fixing crime and drug driven actions in making smart calls.

Stupid bans not among them.

Obviously I do not support a income based ownership model.

those government fencing operations have done a wonderful job in the big cities.

The bad folk burglarize homes for guns. They fence them with the government. The burglarized homeowner calls the insurance company and gets new guns.

To pack and carry loaded arms at all times. If a person is so incapacitated that they are unable to express this gawd given right, then I propose that Medicare be amended to provide a body guard to stand in for these poor souls. This body guard would carry the afflicted's choice of gun and ammo and would be allowed/required to fire at all person or persons who are deemed as a threat to the life of the veggie.

That is all.

34. If you don't want to live under the 2nd amendment, move to Mexico,
they don't have that right there(in paradise!)

Liberty isn't cheap.

A gun is a tool for an individual's self protection. I need one with me most of the time, because
I live in a area that has mountain lions, javalina, and rattlesnakes. If my home was ever invaded,
the Sheriff is at least 45 minutes away in the best case scenario. Should I have a right to self
protection?

I kill at least 4 rattlesnakes each summer in my yard (but not the ones out away from my home). I
killed an attacking javalina two years ago in my barn (between me and the doorway.) I have seen two
lions within a mile of my house and have heard them several times at night from my rear deck. Rabies
is a growing problem here, as seen on nationwide TV from Cottonwood, Arizona (about 50 mile from here.)

By the way, the javalina was delicious!

Had the five conservative justices on the US Supreme Court arrived at a decision inconsistent with your perceived right to keep, bear, and use any and all arms, you would screaming to the high heavens about how the decision was bogus, that it was the product of right-wing justices and what else could you expect from those asswipes? You guys couldn't care less about jurisprudence, unless it happens to bolster the conclusion you reached a long time ago.

50. Your case is different
You have a reason to own those weapons, for your safety and for other practical reasons,

The guy that killed those 4 officers in CA had no right to own the weapons he had. The guy that just shot up and killed these people obviously has mental issues.

Mexico has plenty of illegal weapons, the gangs outgun the police every day. That's why I have a problem with the US even talking about giving military type weapons to the Mexican government and police. The police deparments are so corrupt those weapons will find their way back into the US.

71. Same thing here
There hasn't been a lion around here in at least 50 years, the only real predators we have are coyotes but boy do we have rattlesnakes. Last year was a slow year (only killed two) but the year before, either 8 or 9. They crawl up in the warm asphalt drive apron after the sun goes down and they're still there the next morning when I go down to the mailbox to get the paper. We keep a .410 right by the front door. My wife hates the things and wants to move out of here but I'm resisting so far.

Our sheriff flat told me he can't protect us should an emergency occur since he is 20 to 25 minutes away and he can't afford a full time patrol in our sparsely populated area.

You won't hear me spouting any cold dead hand bullshit but being armed in this area is just a damn good idea.

77. It's too bad that other gun owners are the ones walking in and shooting innocent people.

Maybe you should convince them to only shoot snakes too. Cause frankly, their actions really are making you personally(a gun nut) look bad.

78. Get working on that weed ban..Finish that one up and I will give up
the hunting and target weapons I own. Good luck with that.

Like banning penis to prevent rape. How can a person have a penis and just not run around raping people all day.

I am really confused. Oh wait.

80. Been here a LONG time. Long enough to appreciate a majority
long enough to know that gun control is a complete crock of look good shuck and jive shit. Prohibition fails in all cases. Drugs are just one example. Drugs are banned, but still quite available to those who choose to find them. Choose to follow the law, drug ban works.

Gun control is easier than fixing the problem of people who have no lower to go. People are lazy and choose gun control, it is small simple and makes press. Everybody feels warm until they get tossed out of office because the country is no longer stupid. No recourse for people leads to violent behavior..

That is why the swiss and fins dont have shootings like this, no street violence. Provide mental health care, safety net, productive lifestyles and realistic drug law and watch this symptom go away. Not much more progressive a position than that to have.

Dont let the fact that I just clubbed your childish argument to death deter you from the simple facts placed in front of you.

Oh yeah, name calling is rude.

33. I am curious if all of these shooters have something
in common. Do they belong to the same kind of religion? Are
they in the same political scene?
Are they all on oxycotin? Are they all recently divorced,
terminated from employment? Do they
have similar backgrounds? Are we being infiltrated by
suiciders who are trying to get our government
to implement some strategy to eliminate these shootings? Are
there folks who are setting these up?

Or are people just generally going loco in America? Which is
a viable possibility given how much
people have lost.

38. It's probably the economy. Seriously.
Crime and violence goes up in bad times. People get desperate, or feel justified, or just become very stressed.
Local vandalism and theft is up in my area. The business owners knew it was coming.

64. Nursing home gunman 'had cancer'
A gunman who shot dead eight people at a North Carolina nursing home had told family members he had been diagnosed with cancer, according to his ex-wife.

-----

But Stewart's ex-wife Sue Griffin said he had recently told relatives he had cancer, was preparing for a long trip and said he was going to "go away" .

Ms Griffin, who was married to Stewart for 15 years before they divorced in 2001, said he had been violent during their marriage.

"He did have some violent tendencies from time to time," she said. "I wouldn't put it (the shooting) past him. I hate to say it, but it is true."

Although the couple had not spoken since their divorce, the week before the shooting Stewart made a number of efforts to contact her through family members, she said.

No excuse unless it's brain cancer that warped his thinking. Though looks like this guy had violent tendencies before the cancer if he has it.
