3. One of the great announcers.
I'm a Mets fan, but I listened to the Phillies radio broadcasts whenever they played the Mets just to hear Harry Kalas. "That ball is outta here!"

He will definitely be missed.

5. Oh no!
I just listened to him yesterday! One of the reasons I love watching the Phillies so much is because of Harry's play calling.

RIP, my good friend. You will be missed by many

7. Was he the guy with the stentorian voice in the old grainy NFL films?
I used to love watching those.

9. No, that likely would have been John Facenda
The man Steve Sabal of NFL Films called "The Voice of God."

17. That would probably be John Facenda you're thinking of.
He was the King of Philadelphia tv news for two decades and the original voice of NFL films.

"The Autumn Wind" (one of his most famous pieces.)

I hate the Raiders but this is classic.

Not to take anything away from Kalas, though. He was the voice of Philly, no doubt. He will be sorely missed.

18. I think you're thinking of John Facenda
Harry did some of the NFL Films voice-over after Facenda died about 20 years ago. He also narrated the "game of the week" back in the 70s'. Harry's voice was deepened by smoking.

10. Very sad news
I grew up in Philadelphia, not necessarily a baseball fan (but had a father who was) and Mr Kalas was inescapable. His passing is as era-ending as Chick Hearn's passing was in Los Angeles.

15. I remember him from his early days
He had a smile like a kid, and just beamed with his enthusiasm for being part of the game. I don't think it will sound like baseball so much without him.

22. And Curt Flood. And at some point Richie Allen will join Harry in the smoking lounge
Here's to the passing of a big chunk of Phillies (and MLB) history.

And to Dick Allen, one of the best hitters ever to pass through Chicago during my lifetime, which has included Sandburg, Buckner, Madlock, and Thomas.

Sorry - don't mean to hijack. News of Harry's passing brings back floods (and Floods ;-)) of memories.

23. Welcome Midniteagle! Good to have another Phillies fan here!

Harry was part of the soundtrack of my summers.

We don't have cable, so we put a radio out on the deck, bring our books outside, and listen to the Phils outside, on the radio, the way baseball is supposed to be experienced if you can't be at the park!
