NC Rep Calls Gay Student (Matthew Shepard) Slaying Case a 'Hoax'
Source: ABC/AP

A North Carolina congresswoman said Thursday she chose her words poorly when she called claims that a Wyoming college student was murdered because he was gay a "hoax."

Republican Rep. Virginia Foxx said during debate in the House that Matthew Shepard's 1998 death wasn't a hate crime and shouldn't be invoked by supporters of a bill to expand the definition of such crimes to include violence motivated by sexual orientation.

"We know that young man was killed in the commitment of a robbery. It wasn't because he was gay," Foxx said during debate. "The bill was named for him, the hate-crimes bill was named for him, but it's really a hoax that continues to be used as an excuse for passing these bills."

Shepard died several days after he was found tied to a remote fence in Wyoming, severely beaten and robbed of $20. Prosecutors said he was lured from a bar by two men, including one whose defense attorney said reacted violently after Shepard made a sexual advance.

12. four things stood out. (1) The AP article never mentioned she is a Pub. (2) The AP article says
ahe apologized, but the article does not quote ANY apology to gays, only to Shepherd's mourners and only for "poor word choice," as though this were merely a matter of English usage;

(3) the article says Foxx blamed misleading articles she had read--wtf is this Congress critter reading?

(4) her rep sys most of the calls to her office came from out of state.

My conclusions:

A/ AP has proven yet again that it is a Republican shill POS as far as news organizations go, right there with Fox, just not as honest about it;

B/ This FOXX woman needs to GO, right along with Michele Bachman. Please remember this when her opposition needs to raise money to defeat her.

11. huge embarassment!
She represents an area in the mountains but we all pay the price for her (and a couple of others') lunacy.

Please know, we are not all insensitive so and so's - I was born here as were my parents and grandparents and etc... I grew up with respect for all people. :) Had a bumper sticker for years that said: "I'm from North Carolina, but I don't support Jesse Helms."

How does this progressive southern state keep electing these people?

13. Yes. And this from Wiki:
In September 2005, Foxx was one of 11 members of Congress to vote against the $51 billion aid package to victims of Hurricane Katrina. She was also one of only 33 Republicans to vote against the extension of the Voting Rights Act in July 2006.

14. If Republicans Really Want To Know Why
The are got trounced in the last two elections they need only look at Michelle Bachmann and Virginia Foxx to see the face of the current GOP. That picture drives voters to flock to the other side. The issue for the GOP is not the traditional GOP adjenda as much as it is the calibre of the current crop running the GOP. Who in their right mind would want to identify with people like Bachmann and Foxx?

16. oh, the NC 5th district.
No offense to any of you who live in the 5th, but the sane parts of NC are on the coast and in the Appalachians. The mid-region seems to be full of tobacco-spitting rednecks, at least it was the last time I was there in '02. Definitely pickup truck and rebel flag territory.

18. almost opposite
The 5th is in the Mountains.

The 4th Raleigh, Durham - has had a wonderful Democrat for years. Even Walter "Freedom Fries" Jones has become something of a moderate.

The 13 districts make no sense with the way they are drawn. :) Of the 13, only 5 are currently held by Republicans.

19. The 5th isn't just in the mountains...
It is in the upper corner of the mountains of NC. If you have ever been to Jefferson, NC you would understand. It literally seems as though there is a church for every house. We still have a gay ole time up in Fleetwood Falls every year.

17. Highly doubt that she chose those words spontaneously -- as she's implying,
They were undoubtedly written by some juvenile young Republican and reviewed by that scumbag Congresswoman prior to her actually reading them.
