TIME: Bush Library raises $100 million in 100 days
Source: TIME

George W. Bush often has said that historians will vindicate his presidency. And since he left office, he's moving fast to give them the tools.

Longtime financial backers of the 43rd president have raised more than $100 million for a presidential library at Southern Methodist University in Dallas that will house his official papers, sources close to Bush told TIME. Much of the money was collected in the 100 days or so since Bush left the White House, a pace much faster than that of his recent predecessors. At least so far, none of it has come from overseas, the sources said.

The Bush fundraising effort, compared to that of his predecessor, is off to a brisk start. Bill Clinton's library planners had hoped to receive pledges of $100 million within a year of the end of his presidency, but a pardons scandal delayed that achievement for another year, said Skip Rutherford, who chaired the Clinton library committee.

And how appropriate. I read today that doctor death of Nazi death camp fame lived a long life and died peacefully. Now I read that the worst president in history, war criminal, torturer and mass murderer does not have to worry about funding for his library. What an atrocity. I wonder if the bin Laden family were donors (thanks for letting our son go free, wink, wink). The news has been shit these past two days. I need a fucking break.

3. So where's the list of the donors?
At some point someone will get the list and find that many of the donors for the Bush Libraries are the same donors for the Clinton Library.

38. The people that donated to Clinton Library have no fear of people knowing who they are.
Notice not a single name will come forth on these donations...

39. They're as low profile as the Prop 8 donors in California
How can people boycott their businesses if they won't let their names be known?

We need to talk Laura into running for office, then the donors list will HAVE to be made public.

6. That doesn't translate to 'history will vindicate him'.
All it means is that a bunch of dumb effs have a lot of money and are as cruel, selfish, and greedy as he is.

25. "... but could offer no proof"
those are the 5 words that should have followed everything out of their White House and RNC (and it could have prevented the war) so this is probably more of the same. We have recent history on our side to assume that if they said that then the opposite is true

21. I think we all know the impetus behind this
There are two factors playing into this sudden burst of altruism:

First, there are a lot of people in the US who owe Shrub BIG TIME. Between the oil companies, the war profiteers, the private prison racketeers...and that's not to mention the industrialists who know Bush never saw an environmental regulation he didn't want to neuter or a tax on corporations he didn't want to cut in half. There are a lot of extremely rich people who would only have been very rich if Bush v. Gore would have gone the other way, and now it's time for them to say thanks.

And second, with a Democratic president there is always the chance taxes on very rich people will go up...UNLESS! they donate to an organization with an educational mission, which, arguably, the George W. Bush Presidential Museum and Policy Institute is. (Admittedly, the Counter-Bush Library, which we'll erect in a 40-foot shipping container to symbolize all the goods brought in from China that USED to be made here, would be even more educational. Unfortunately, we've all had the decorum to not seriously propose such a thing.) Then they can write off all their ill-gotten gains and be happy.

27. Let's see. Daddy, Jebby, Rice, Ashcroft, Rummy, Gonzales, Tennant, etc
Please. Don't insult us. You know this money was put up by family, through cohorts, big oil, anti-environmentalists, the Bin Ladens, and anyone else who owed a Bush a favor. Let's not forget the right-wing extremists and so-called "Christian" base. Sorry gang, but GWB was a disgusting failure as governor and, as an "illegitimate" president and needs to go away. What are they going to fill the museum with...mementos of war crimes, lies, images of torture being carried out, economic disaster, racism, cronyism, illiteracy, and "propaganda" about 9/11 which happened on his watch? The curators will probably "forget" to acknowledge the names of the hundreds of thousands of victims whose blood he has on his hands. I wouldn't let my child go on that little day trip with school. Probably have nightmares for a month.

are whack..my mother was methodist..since she married a Baptists..I worry about her she has started watching Bill Orally and spouting that stuff.
Most of us realize that Texas has been taken hostage by those oil mafia types,
gerrymandering, theft of elections.
The only thing I don't understand is that why ya'll put up with it.
I thought in TX if a man needed shooting, someone would volunteer. Hell do it without even bothering to volunteer!
I have had my fill of the ( * ) family, having lived in Fla with jeb and his election fraud squad.
I lived in Alabama and even George Wallace told me over the fence one day(I lived next door to the Gov Residence)
He said " the Bush family makes the Mafia look like damned church deacons"
This was when poppy ( * ) was VP.
sorry to correct Everything! hit post instead of preview.
I was just watching David Schuster talking about the ( * ) library and lost my train of thought.
Haliburton to have a display showing their idea of helping cement ( * ) legacy!
Does anyone else think he sounds a bit like Dudley DoRight? (no offense intended David just pokin)

33. We need to have these libraries outlawed
Or rather, have the funding for presidential libraries come from the federal budget instead of private donors. As it is now, individual donors can pay off presidents after they leave office by "donating" millions to the "presidential libraries" and not have to worry about campaign finance laws, ethics probes, bribery investigations, etc. I'd rather see each president receive $5 or $10 million annually in the federal budget for their libraries. At least then all of the funding would be above-board.
