Fla. Gov. Crist to run for Senate

Gov. Charlie Crist will run for the U.S. Senate instead of seeking a second term, saying he can help Florida more from Washington.

Crist issued a press release Tuesday announcing his 2010 election plans instead of holding an announcement event.

He immediately becomes the front-runner to replace Republican Sen. Mel Martinez, who is leaving office after one term. He is also a top prize for Republicans nationally as they try to keep Democrats from capturing at least 60 Senate seats.
