Lawmaker wants to make 2010 'Year of the Bible'
Source: Politico

“Does that mean 2009 is not the year of the Bible?” mocked Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), who is Jewish. “What is 2012 the year of? The Quran?”

“That’s an endorsement of religion by the federal government, and we shouldn’t be doing that,” said Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.), even though he has introduced his own legislation dealing with religion.

“Republican lawmakers with apparently too much time on their hands and no solutions to offer the country are pushing a resolution that will not address the nation’s problems or advance prosperity or even untangle their previous governing mistakes,” blogged the Progressive Puppy.

Broun rejects the critiques leveled at this effort.

“This doesn’t have anything to do with Christianity,” he said in an interview with POLITICO. Rather, he says, it seeks to recognize that the Bible played an integral role in the building of the United States, including providing the basis for our freedom of religion that allows Muslims, Hindus and even atheists to vocalize their own beliefs.
...

Broun has gathered 15 co-sponsors, all Republicans, but says he’s looking for more and hopes Democrats will sign on, as well.

“This is not a partisan issue,” he said. “I want it to be bipartisan.”

Whether he’s successful or not — the same measure didn’t go anywhere last year — at least Broun and his fellow supporters can take heart in one fact: They already had a “year of the Bible.”

Ronald Reagan designated 1983 as one, with Congress’ blessing.

Hey, if Reagan did it, all the more reason to say 'sure' - and didn't Reagan also grant Amnesty to aliens in this country? - well, the GOP has set a nice precedent and we should definitely follow ALL of them. Thanks Ronny.

I'm sure people like the Taliban do think it's the year of the Quran - does this Congressman really want to imitate them?

If people want to live their lives on the basis of the Bible, or any other religious text, fine for them; but it shouldn't be imposed by the state.

3. OK, so long as 2011 is named the "Year of the Koran",
and 2013 is declared the "Year of 'On the Origin of Species'".

There is some small precedent: we've already named 2012 the "Year of the Mayan Calendar" -- in the popular imagination at least.

Edited on Fri May-22-09 06:42 AM by Judi Lynn
Just like a half-witted Republican, the lovely Rep. Broun wants to tell you how he thinks you should think, believe, behave while making a complete wreck of his own life.

He probably should consider wearing his glasses more often when he's outdoors, if he intends to do a lot of shooting.

Rep. Paul Broun's Poor Defense of Marriage

Paul Broun and his dog, who will never get to be one of his divorcees.

As we've noted before, Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA) is on a quest to protect marriage from homosexuals (whatever that means) by trying to pass a constitutional amendment at the federal level defining marriage as between a man and a woman.

Tom Crawford, BlogforDemocracy's newest blogger, points something out about Broun and the sanctity of marriage:
It would be nice, however, if the media that reports on the activities of people like Broun would also provide the useful context about the politician's personal history. The Athens Banner-Herald dutifully ran an article in its May 8 edition about Broun's latest "attempt" to ban gay marriage. Blake Aued, who's normally a decent enough reporter, failed to mention that Broun himself has been divorced three times and is currently in his fourth opposite-sex marriage.

It's not really that big a deal, but come on. If a guy has failed at the number of heterosexually oriented marriages that Broun has, then hasn't he pretty much destroyed any credibility he might have as a critic of other marriages between persons of the same sex? I'm just asking.

13. Wait...I checked. In 1983, over 200 Marines were killed
in an attack in Lebanon. And, I'll bet the sponsor is probably not happy that the Supreme Court declared several local laws restricting abortion unconstitutional. And pop star Madonna (darling of the right wing) released her first smash-hit album.

Year of the Bible, eh?

18. Once again....
instead of dealing with real issues, Congress opts to provide legislative theater. How stupid do they think Christians are? I have my butt on the pew weekly and I prefer the separation of church and state thank you very much. I would rather them be working on the state's problems and let me worry about the church's problems.

21. What part of the Bible was the basis for our religious freedom? How did the Bible
play an integral role in the building of America? I think Broun has confused the Bible with the Constitution of the United States--from which the Framers omitted all mention of God, the bible, religion, etc.

How about naming 2010 the year of renewed commitment to, and reverence for,the Constitution of the United States? I'd go for that.

23. Lets make it the year of the historical-critical study of the Bible
Its high time that we let the few who have studied this ancient document in its linguistic, literary, religious, and historical context explain it to us. Lets set a standard that nobody can lead this discussion who hasn't studied the original Biblical languages for at least 1 year.

There won't be any takers on the right.

not religious zealots like so many in the GOP. "it seeks to recognize that the Bible played an integral role in the building of the United States, including providing the basis for our freedom of religion that allows Muslims, Hindus and even atheists to vocalize their own beliefs." What BS! How was the Bible responsible for our freedom of, and from, religion?
