Leaders say they convinced of Davis' innocence
May 29, 2009 2:44 PM ET

JACKSON, Ga. (AP) - After meeting for nearly two hours with Troy Davis on Friday, two Georgia congressman and the president of the NAACP said they were convinced of his innocence and committed to saving his life.

Congressmen John Lewis and Hank Johnson said they plan to return to Washington to pursue other legal means to resolving Davis' case, which is currently back in the U.S. Supreme Court on appeal. NAACP President Ben Jealous said the case is now a national priority for the organization.

Davis was convicted in the 1989 slaying of Savannah, Ga., police officer Mark MacPhail but his guilt is now in question after several witnesses from his trial have changed their testimony. Supporters are calling for a new trial for Davis.

1. Having looked at this case...
...one thing is clear...Only Troy and god know the truth - and I do not believe in god.

Every inmate is innocent - just ask them. This is not to say that Troy did what he is accused of...simply to say that just because he denies it and some witnesses have died or changed testimony does not mean he is innocent.

However, with so many questions surrounding this case, the only logical option is to have a retrial. Georgia is not well known for fair trials for black men.

3. You deserve credit for bringing this to my attention. Thank you!
I love the phrase "national priority". I know you feel the same way I do. So I don't need to say a thing. May truth be known.

By the way, I'm in California. On the coast in Mendocino county. So I'm far removed, but still very much desire for honesty and empathy and truth in all cases, not just this. This case is representative of how many prisoners?

10. Let's keep up the hope.
I almost don't want to say this, but think of how we'll all feel if and when Troy sees true justice. I don't hold my breath much any more. But this time I am praying and holding my breath. In a cruel world, there must be some kindness. That's all we have here.

Troy Davis innocent, say congressmen Lewis, Johnson

They say they’re committed to saving life of accused cop killer
By ERRIN HAINES

Associated Press

Friday, May 29, 2009

JACKSON, Ga. — After meeting for nearly two hours with death row inmate Troy Davis on Friday, two Georgia congressmen and the president of the NAACP said they are convinced of his innocence and committed to saving his life.

Congressmen John Lewis and Hank Johnson said they plan to return to Washington to pursue other legal means to resolving Davis’ case, which is currently back in the U.S. Supreme Court on appeal. NAACP President Ben Jealous said the case is now a national priority for the organization.

Davis’ sister, Martina Correia, said she was encouraged that others were now telling his story.

“For almost 20 years, I’ve been trying to get somebody to listen,” said Correia. “Now we have the world watching and the state of Georgia still wants to be defiant.”
