Khadr set to appear in Gitmo court again

GUANTANAMO BAY–Washington may be gripped by the debate over the fate of the 240 detainees here, but there's no indication the prison is set to close, and Canadian captive Omar Khadr is expected to make that familiar trip from his cell to a hilltop war crimes court Monday morning just as he has 15 times before.

A military judge ordered Khadr to appear before him after months of infighting between his Pentagon-appointed defence lawyers was not resolved in a closed-door session today. It will be the first hearing here since U.S. President Barack Obama took power in January and immediately ordered the prison closed.

If Judge Army Col. Patrick Parrish asks the Toronto-born prisoner on Monday to choose between his lawyers it would be one of the rare times Khadr has spoken in court.

Law to let terror victims sue in Canadian courts, Harper says

The federal government will soon introduce legislation that will allow victims of terrorism to sue perpetrators in Canadian courts, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Sunday.
He said the legislation would allow "victims of terrorism to seek justice against individuals, organizations and foreign states that support terrorism."

Law professor James Morton, who was at the CJC event, said that while news of the legislation received a standing ovation, the announcement also raises questions about how Canada deals with foreign states.
