U.S.: We will continue to support Israel in UN
Source: Yuval Azoulay, Nadav Shragai, Natasha Mozgovaya, and Haaretz Service

Contrary to recent reports, the U.S. will maintain its support of Israel in the United Nations, a U.S. official told reporters on Monday.

Robert Wood, State Department deputy Spokesman, made the comments after earlier Monday the New York Times had reported that the Obama administration was considering a series of symbolic measures to force Israel to halt all construction in West Bank settlements.

--snip--

"I'm not going to comment on this New York Times report, but I think the President and Secretary have spoken very clearly to where we are with regard to the settlement question."

According to the New York Times article, administration officials said that measures under discussion include dropping the U.S.' near uniform support of Israel in the United Nations and withholding its usual veto on resolutions critical of Israel.

Among other pressure points, Washington could review loan guarantees to Israel, diplomats said, or share and coordinate with less alacrity on security matters, while the European Union could get tough on trade terms for produce from settlements.

Just in case there was any confusion, of course.

7. please, please don't use that term. testicles don't make a person courageous
and vaginas aren't synonymous with cowardice. and don't even begin to pretend you're talking about meowers.

14. lol. yeah right. everyone knows that "wag the tail" refers to cats
and that cats are sooo well known for wagging their tails. You clearly were using "pussy" as a synonym for coward and everyone fucking well knows you weren't talking about kitties. talk about cowardice.

2. The NYT reports it based on anon sources
who likely were looking to spark this exact statement from the Obama admin. AIPAC still knows how to pull the levers.

3. Tell me again why we are taking ANY side in this
Realistically, this boils down to religious territorial fighting where neither side is more evil than the other, but both think they have the God given right to be there.

Would a "win" from either side make our country less safe? No? Then why are we taking sides in someone else's fight. I am sick of our country taking sides on this. We should bring in the UN peacekeeping forces to provide on the ground support and try to foster negotiations between both sides.

5. WE should bring in a UN peacekeeping force?
Who are we to tell the UN what to do? Let them take some action for once.

16. Do the Palestinians have a powerful Washington lobby?
Are they considered an important voting block?

The answers to these questions reveal our actions, it has nothing whatsoever to do with protecting a vulnerable democracy.

23. We "take sies" in many parts of the world
that, for some reason, are ignored by the tunneled visioned DUers.

Perhaps you would have preferred that we did not "take side" between Nazi Germany and the rest of Europe? Or in the former Yugoslavia?

I, for one, am glad that we do care, and we can tell the difference between real acts and sheer propaganda.

most to get Israel to stop their own unique terrorism. I condemn all the support for their terrorism. I think AIPAC deters and foments in a most despicable way. They have exceeded any decency involved in linking two countries. They are a predatory tool to inhumanity. I resent this country blessing and cooperating with them. Get AIPAC out of the our military. What has gone on and excessive power in our government Should be condemend and reversed.

You don't think other states practice terrorism, e.g. the US and UK with regard to Iraq?

And I doubt that AIPAC are in your military?!

Yes, AIPAC is everywhere in our government. That is their purpose. They don't just appear on rv as guest experts.

There is a lot of terrorism, including state terrorism, to go round.

6. How long
will Israel be the child to the US's adult? Why do we continue to provide so much support to this country? Shouldn't they be able to go it on their own after 60 years? If they can't support themselves perhaps they shouldn't continue to be.

18. Actually, it's more like America is the child and Israel the adult.
We're the ones who have a chain through our nose and are being led wherever they wish to take us.

And we're not the ones with the staff. Google talmud, learn more.

Israeli law is not based on the Talmud if that's what you mean. Or are you trying to refer us to RW hate-sites?

28. Firstly, most of the ruling elite in Israel are not ultra-religious.
Secondly, those who are, do not rely purely on the Talmud: they do study it but the Torah is more important.

Thirdly, could you please point to an actual quote from the Talmud that says that the existence of anyone not Jewish is 'only to be exploited to their benefit'? I am not aware of any such remark in the Talmud, and suspect that you have come across this idea, directly or indirectly, from some hate-site. If you can find it in the Talmud, please quote it.

33. How is this a reply to anything I said?
And, to the best of my knowledge: there are Orthodox, Conservative, Reform and Reconstructionist Jews, but there is no group called 'Talmud Jews'.

In any case, most Israeli government members are not preoccupied with religion: there ARE small pro-theocracy parties, but neither Labor, Kadima nor Likud are particularly religious.

A little more objectivity by both would be nice, but unlikely.

One rogue nation supporting another rogue nation. We'll invade Iraq preemptively, Israel can destroy Iran, preemptively.
