Obama Administration to Reveal Plans for Katrina Housing Transition

The Obama administration will announce plans today to virtually give away roughly 1,800 mobile homes to 3,400 families displaced by Hurricane Katrina who are living in government-provided housing along the Gulf Coast, officials said.

The administration also will make available $50 million in rental vouchers to income-eligible trailer occupants who move to targeted housing projects, and take over from Louisiana the job of helping residents find permanent homes, said a senior White House official, speaking on the condition of anonymity before the formal announcement.

"We knew we needed to bring this program to a close," the official said. "We also want to ensure a humane and secure transition for all of them."

1. Is that the same bunch of trailers that spew out formaldehyde fumes
and are dangerous to live in, but were provided by our government for citizens to live in?

2. Probably. Plenty of very people did want to buy them though and
considered their trailers better than the living spaces they were in before Katrina, as well as didn't think they could get a livingspace as good again. I think that's what the Obama administration is targeting.

Regardless, at least the Obama administration is finally doing something to help these people. The bush admin and fema basically did little to nothing. This is like, an adult is here and making decisions and running the place now. I think it's far better than the not knowing and not being able to buy the trailers (so they were told) the victims had to deal with before this decision.
