Ex-GOP Congressman Challenges Alberto Gonzales: 'Let's See What You Think of Waterboarding After You've Tried It!'

WHEELING, W.Va., June 4 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Former Ohio Republican Congressman and radio talk show host Bob Ney has a challenge for ex-Bush administration Attorney General Alberto Gonzales: "Let's see what you think of waterboarding -- after you've tried it!" Gonzales has maintained publicly that the Bush administration's waterboarding of alleged terror suspects did not constitute torture.

"If Alberto Gonzales wants to clear his name by saying he didn't cooperate in torture, then let him try it himself," said Ney, whose 1 PM show on WVLY and WVLY.net is heard in eastern Ohio, western Pennsylvania and throughout the western panhandle of West Virginia.

"When it comes to the worst abuses by the Bush administration, Alberto Gonzales is scurrying under every rock you turn up," said Ney, who served in Congress from 1995 to 2006, when he resigned to face criminal charges in connection with the Jack Abramoff scandal.

"Whether it was rushing to the sickbed of his predecessor, John Ashcroft, to try to pressure him to sign off on illegal warrantless wiretaps, or getting the Justice Department to approve clear violations of the Geneva Conventions, there was Alberto Gonzales. He didn't follow the law; he did whatever he was told. He's part of the 'Great Lie' that was the last administration."

1. How about cuts to genitalia? We need to stop acting as though waterboarding was the be all and end
all. It was but one of a number of torture methods the Bush administration resurrected from the Middle Ages.

6. Yes, the important issue is that waterboarding was NOT the only torture
Almost everything they did was torture! I just watched the horrific documentary "Taxi to the Dark Side" last night, and while the info wasn't particularly new to me, it might be to some. It's a powerful film.

People really don't understand that this whole "torture" issue will have long-lived consequences on our country and the world. It doesn't go away because Obama doesn't want to think about it. In fact, it becomes even more insideous, especially when the old guard are moved into higher positions as the new guard.

I think I want out

17. Saw that. Bill Moyers Journal last week was "Torturing Democracy." I hope you catch the podcast.
We HAVE to stop letting them refer only to waterboarding. Eight days of sleeplessness with loud music, bright lights, no clothing, cold air coming in; cuts to genitalia, etc.

Also, the UN Convention Against Torture specifies that it does not want to get into a semantic battle over whether things that are demeaning are torture. It treats both the same. Then again, it also requires that member nations, like the US, prosecute torturers, so...

18. Yep, saw it. It's online too, here:

Standard Operating Procedure is another one, although a bit too artsy (Errol Morris) for my taste for this subject.

19. Didn't see that. 2008 may have seen my last donations to political
candidates or Parties. Since then, my donations so far have gone to the ACLU (of which I've long been a proud member), Amnesty International and PBS.

My contributions are not in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. All the more reason, though, for me to have to really believe in the things to which I donate.

ACLU works for our rights. Amnesty International works to prevent torture. And PBS often tells us what government won't, as well as providing some darn good entertainment and information. I fully support those things.

7. The Fraudulent Fraud Squad, The incredible, disappearing American Center for Voting Rights.
The Fraudulent Fraud Squad, The incredible, disappearing American Center for Voting Rights.
By Richard L. Hasen

Imagine the National Rifle Association's Web site suddenly disappeared, along with all the data and reports the group had ever posted on gun issues. Imagine Planned Parenthood inexplicably closed its doors one day, without comment from its former leaders. The scenarios are unthinkable, given how established these organizations have become. But even if something did happen to the NRA or Planned Parenthood, no doubt other gun or abortion groups would quickly fill the vacuum and push the ideas they'd pushed for years.

Not so for the American Center for Voting Rights, a group that has literally just disappeared as an organization, and for which it seems no replacement group will rise up. With no notice and little comment, ACVR—the only prominent nongovernmental organization claiming that voter fraud is a major problem, a problem warranting strict rules such as voter-ID laws—simply stopped appearing at government panels and conferences. Its Web domain name has suddenly expired, its reports are all gone (except where they have been preserved by its opponents), and its general counsel, Mark "Thor" Hearne, has cleansed his résumé of affiliation with the group. Hearne won't speak to the press about ACVR's demise. No other group has taken up the "voter fraud" mantra.

The death of ACVR says a lot about the Republican strategy of raising voter fraud as a crisis in American elections. Presidential adviser Karl Rove and his allies, who have been ghostbusting illusory dead and fictional voters since the contested 2000 election, apparently mounted a two-pronged attack. One part of that attack, at the heart of the current Justice Department scandals, involved getting the DoJ and various U.S. attorneys in battleground states to vigorously prosecute cases of voter fraud. That prong has failed. After exhaustive effort, the Department of Justice discovered virtually no polling-place voter fraud, and its efforts to fire the U.S. attorneys in battleground states who did not push the voter-fraud line enough has backfired. Even if Attorney General Gonzales declines to resign his position, his reputation has been irreparably damaged., ....

9. .
The short organizational history of ACVR, chronicled indefatigably by Brad Friedman of the Brad Blog, shows that the group was founded just days before its representatives testified before a congressional committee hearing on election-administration issues chaired by then-Rep. (and now federal inmate) Bob Ney. The group was headed by Hearne, national election counsel to Bush-Cheney '04, and staffed with other Republican operatives, including Jim Dyke, a former RNC communications director.

13. Rep. Ney arranged for the lying before his own hearing!
A Congressman arranging for lying to Congress, another felony!
He wasn't charged with a crime for that one though.

14. I like Ney
He's been popping up on progressive shows and offering dynamite tales of GOP malfeasance and fucknuttery.

And he seems to be quite intelligent. That's probably why he isn't sitting in the cell next to Abramoff.
